I've recently taken my side-line welding\fab business to being my primary income source,(got downsized due to company leaving US). I'm realizing just how bad my eyes have gotten. Had 20/20 until a year or so ago. I'm having difficulty trying to compensate. Currently I wear a pair of generic 1.5 or 2.0 reading glass under hood. This produces excessive glare, poor focus on weld travel, ....Considered buying a cheater lens but was told that they create halos and double vision. Considered changing to a 9 lens, ,,,,don't think that to be the wise choice. Anyone have suggestions?Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:Shade selection- this is why I went with a variable AD Hood and I also went with the Optrel because it can go from 5-9 and also 9-13Going to a Lighter shade will not damage your eyes- it is a Comfort choice I feel ya with the changing eye sight- although I haven't had 20/20 for quite some time my eyes have changed and I now have to remove my glasses for reading & welding.I have a second pair in a Safety Style with an RX for short distances- sucks because I can't see across the room.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I just had to reup my eye glass script. While talking to the Doc. I discussed the use of cheaters and any ill affects I might suffer from magnifying the arc light into my eyes. Basically he said not an issue that by using cheaters I would likely darken the shade I use. On to your question I went out and purchased my first set of cheaters (F--- I feel old), I have used them for a week now with and with out my glasses. No issues other than I can see the details I have been missing for a while now. I bought the cheep Radnor 1.00dp plastic cheater. I have also been able to go back to using the darker setting on my Miller Elite. Light GMAW (under 20volts) I use setting 10 SMAW 1/8" 7018 I use setting 11 FCAW 5/64" 20+ volts I use setting 12+

Reply:I would guess you to be 40 or 45? Happens and not a big deal. Go get the bifocals and get back to focusing again. Its an old age thing. Never keep using the cheater lens its can cause eye strain. Focusing and enlargement are two different things.
Reply:I'm also in that boat, does the auto darkening hood help, I have gone to the 1.5's under the hood and it does make a difference. It's funny how in the beginning I just told myself the lenses are getting diry. But even the new lenses don't let me see well anymore."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:Welcome to the club.I look at stuff I did years ago, and it looks better than what I'm doin' today. All a matter of eyesight.I can't see crap closer than 2 feet away. Gotta do something about it.This thread has done me some good too."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
