Where do you guys usually buy your stainless steel? I found only one local place that would sell stainless in non-commercial quantities, but their prices are quite a bit higher than the onlinemetals.com et al, even with shipping added. I am kinda surprised that in a place like Baltimore there would be only one such retail place, but I can't find any others. Anyone live in the area and know of a place?
Reply:I don't know if this is any help, but have you checked out scrapyards?I had a hell of a time rounding up some 1022 cold drawn tubing last year, and wound up buying from some guy in NY that specializes in odd lots of all kinds of tubing. Shipping was a killer, but the only alternative was to buy in MOGAMBO(hefty) lots locally(Tulsa)."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I used to deal with Durrett-Sheppard Steel in Baltimore prior to my retirement. Of course, I usually had quite an order for them to deliver. I have, on occasion, contacted other suppliers for much smaller quantities and asked about picking the order up. Some will, some won't even pull the order for customer pickup. If you're looking for specialty tubing (not sure if they have sheet material) try Dillsburg Aeroplane Works in Dillsburg, PA. They have a large selection, and mail order all over the world. If you're willing to drive for it, Sahd Salvage in Columbia, PA (southern Lancaster County) has a hugh selection of metals for sale. You can go in their yard and pick through the piles/stacks and pay from the scale as you leave. They get a lot of industrial scrap there. Don't know if I'm allowed to give phone #'s here, so send me a message.Be prepared to pay for ANY SS you order. Metal prices are UP. |
