I'm hoping to find some good sites with plans for metal-working projects. I've got an oxy-acetylene welding rig, vices, anvil, drill press, and basic shop tools. I'm hoping to find free plans for practical things and devices - or machines - that may be useful in the yard or on a small farm (I live on rural land). I've been doing Google searches with limited success.I'd consider sites that sell plans, too - if the site illustrates the end-result with pictures and tells you enough about it that it's clear the project's worth building. Also, I had an uncle who used to have stacks of old publications like Mecanics Illustrated and Popular Mecanics. And I can't help suspecting that there must be a few decades-worth of metal-shop plans from old publications like those, that could still yield useful items. Anyone know if these articles have been collected someplace? Thanks.Joel

Reply:www.millerwelds.com and www.hobartwelders.com both have projects forums, but that Lincoln Electric link is one of my favorites for simple, practical, instructive project plans.
Reply:Thanks fellas. These sites are great. Anybody else has some suggestions, they're welcome too.Joel
Reply:Somebody else here has a thread going on Efficient Wood Stove Design, so I checked out the thread. There was mention of an article from the old Mother Earth News magazine - artcile titled " THE AMAZING $500 WOOD-BURNING STOVE ... THAT YOU CAN BUILD FOR $35 (OR LESS!)"So there's an example of the general kind of DIY thing that I'm looking for, but I've found that Mother Earth's old projects/plans are hard to search on-line. I've sort of figured out their history. Mother Earth started out as a real nuts & bolts magazine for hands-on guys, then around 1980 it became aimed to the deep suburbanite person who doesn't really know much beyond how to run a skillsaw and hold a wrench - so the projects became much more basic and wimpy. It's still pretty much like that these days, from what I can tell.Sad. Out there somewhere is a lot of good info on making useful things. nn I just know it, but can't quite find all the roads to it. |
