I just got a  O/A rig and want to weld ( not braze!!!!!) some very small parts of mild steel, and I cant figure out what kind of rod to use. I bought some RG45 rod but it is copper or brass rod and looks like braze not weld. I want to WELD not braze. I want some steel rod. Thanks for any help
Reply:You have the right rod.  The copper coating is supposed to be there.Try again and show us pictures DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Ok I will try again, it just seems like it flows to easy to be welded, but I have not welded in about 30 years. So the RG45 is as strong as the old stuff ?
Reply:The copper coating is to protect the steel from rusting.  Another great rod (cheap too) is the common coat hanger.  Flows real good too.

Reply:A buddy and I have been also using some of the hanging rod for suspended ceilings, as I recall about 30-40 peices around 40" long, real cheap ($8) at Lowes....We don't use it for anything structual, works ok for yard art.Miller 140 w A/SHF Flux Core WelderDewalt Chop SawSmith O/A TorchHarley Electra Glide Classic
Reply:Can I use some of my mig wire(so76)  to weld with my oxy setup ?
Reply:In my boces class we used tig filler (ER70s-2).

Reply:Technically anything with an '"E" in front of it is designed for Electric welding- although it may work it is not the right FillerI don't know what the BOCE class is but they be teaching you wrong.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:A little more clarification on the RG and ER:"Dear Ed - What you have stated is pretty much correct.   AWS A5.2 specifies iron and steel rods for Oxyfuel gas welding.  The R45, R60, and R65 rods (it is interesting to note that the RG designation was last included in the 1969 edition of A5.2 but those designations still persist in common usage) are included in this specification.  The R indicates that these are rods. AWS A5.18 specifies carbon steel electrodes and rods for gas shielded arc welding.   The ER70S-2, ER70S-3, ER70S-6, etc designations are included in this specification.  The ER indicates that the product can be use either as an electrode (as in mig welding) or as a rod (as in Tig welding).  The differentiation between an electrode and a rod is that an electrode will be part of the electrical circuit in the welding operation while a rod will not be in the electrical circuit. While the A5.18 products are intended to be Mig, Tig, or PAW filler metals and the A5.2 products are intended to be oxyfuel gas welding filler metals, I know that Tig rods (A5.18) are often used for gas welding.  I don't think the use of gas welding rods (A5.2) for tig is as common.
