Is anyone familiar with gear reducer?I have a 1hp 1730rpm motor (7/8 output shaft) that I need to put a 10:1 reducer on.I need the reducer output shaft to go out the top of the reducer. The ones I see on the internet say left or right. It looks like a vent hole at the top of the reducers so I am guessing that would prevent me from mounting it on its side to get output shaft going up.Does anyone have a suggestion?ThanksMillerMatic 212, Lincoln Precision TIG 225, Hypertherm 45XP
Reply:Hello Kaos, To accommodate various mounting positions, most gear boxes usually have several options for vent, fill and drain points. Usually the ports are NPT threaded openings in the gear case. What is a vent port in one configuration, could become a drain or fill port in another, unused ports are simply plugged.Good LuckWhatya buildin' ?
Reply:Not an expert by any means concerning speed/gear reducers, however, am familiar with a few applications. Current name brand speed reducers that I have worked with are sealed units capable of multi-position mounting. If it has a vent it may have tapped and plugged holes where you can change the position of the vent for different mounting options. Hope this helps.
Reply:The instructions with the reducer will tell you what hole to measure oil from and how much the capacity is in that position. It'll have plugs on most sides for drain and fill. Depending on how it's mounted, you can mount the motor from the reducer, or mount the motor, then hang the reducer from it, but usually they are all position.
Reply:Thanks for the responses.
Reply:Check with the specific model reducer to make SURE it can be mounted in the position you desire. Some may be all-position, others may not.  Because of something like maybe the 'sump' arrangement might not allow proper lube splash/flow if not mounted in the 'allowable' position(s).Check.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Now Sam,You didn't think they hired all those South of the Border workers just to pull feathers did you?  Someon has got to blow the guts out of them with pressure washers.  Others are busy head choppin and others cutting all those breasts up and pulling the bones out of them.  Others got to box the wings up for  Hooters.  And some ones got to throw away the head, feet and beaks, at least the left over surplus ones after they grind most of them into those cheap "hot" dogs.  Not many left to  pull feathers.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I don't have many pictures to post yet but I will have soon.I just started work on a 1/8th inch thick steel barrel. Most people use plastic but I like working on the metal and had the barrel given to me so I am going to give it a try. So far I have the barrel cut to size and holes drilled for the plucker fingers.

Reply:You could have just built a slightly bigger one by using the (already drilled and enameled) tub from an old washing machine!  Big enough for turkeys, even of the Political kind.

Reply:Looks like a standard gear box to me. No vents, just fill and drain plugs. Have something similar atop an ash auger at 45 degree angle to the gound. Ya need a spec sheet for running them at an angle so as to get the right oil level. The one in the pic should work fine for ya. Unless your business is plucking chickens then might think different.
Reply:I went ahead and ordered the one in the picture. There is a place in my city that sells the lovejoy couplings to match my motor and main shaft. Thanks for the responses.
