I have so far read the "Welders Handbook" by Richard Finch, saw the videos of Ron Covell "Tig welding Basics" and arc welding 1 and 2 by Steve Bleile. These have provided a good intoduction to welding, but Iam now looking for some more detail, as Iam new to welding I would like to learn how to do things right the first time... and try and keep bad habbits to a minnium Thanks!
Reply:You will like Lincoln Electrics Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding A.K.A. "The bible"Between that and the Machinery's Handbook, you can do whatever you need with metal.

Reply:Yep, Lincoln's Bible will give you a very thorough introduction and history. For only $25, it's also worth buying the Miller Student Package. It includes several books and booklets the cover a wide range of welding disciplines and includes slide rule calculators for three processes and a coupon for a rebate on some popular machines.

Reply:There's nothing wrong with reading and I encourage it. I have more than three dozen books on welding. I've read most of them, cover to cover. You can read until your eyes fall out and you still won't know how to weld. I just finished my third welding class and I start on my fourth January 5th. After "The Bible", I liked "Modern Welding" by Althouse-Turnquist-Bowditch. Keep reading, but there's no substitute for time spent welding. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:On miller's website, they have the "TIG Handbook" that is one of the best TIG writeups I have seen. It has accurate information. From what I've seen, good welding books are rare. I think an author typically finds a welder, and they team up to write a book. You have one guy that knows nothing about welding, and one that knows nothing about writing. Then, if the one welder that the author chooses to work with gives him incorrect information, it gets published. For example, it the welder says that you cannot use pure tungsten on an inverter machine, it gets published as fact.Proud to be a UNION worker. Better pay, better benefits, better work environment.
