I've been welding for 6 years but I've only done custom Fab welding (mig/flux core) we built car haulers race car frames and things for a local rail car manufacture. My question is what type of welding would be best suited for me out of Structural Welding, pipe welding etc... thanks for the suggestions in advance.
Reply:For structural steel and pipe, it would be hard to top stick welding. With tig, you'd need a bottle, and then wind becomes an issue with higher elevation and open enviroments. The amount of leads and hose involved would be problematic on some jobs. Arc welding can be done in any enviroment, and gives a welder many options of filler rods to deal with complex issues like high carbon/ low carbon steels, low hydrogen steels, etc. And, with stick, you can weld in high wind, outdoors up high without the need for a pedal or rheostat on the torch. Also, there are many power source generators/ welders that are ready to go out there, just plug in some long leads, and go welding. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:Yea i'm doing some stay busy work right now and my dads about to sell the business. So i'm trying to get out there and travel, weld, and make some good money but not really sure what I could actually do. I don't really know a whole lot about structural welding, pipe welding, and whatever else there is so im just trying to figure out what i would be able to show up pass a welding test and go work. |
