I've been looking at some TIG machines and some of them have a max thickness stated in the info sheet. I'm trying to figure out what that means exactly. Hopefully you guys can help me understand:Say a machine is "rated" to 1/4" mild steel. Is that supposed to mean that this machine will be able to do 1/4" material welds in a single pass? As I understand it if getting enough heat is a problem then beveling and a good root pass followed by multiple passes can get around that. Am I missing something here?
Reply:If you are looking for 100% penetration on that 1/4" material you're gunna be looking at doing some bevelling, to ensure you get proper fusion, no matter what size tig machine you have.... Then you have to look at how much filler metal would have to pass through your hands, to fill the huge gap, which you would need to achieve full pen. Not likely to be done in 1 pass....Last edited by Newfie_1986; 01-12-2009 at 04:08 PM. |
