wanting to learn how to weld. thinking i want a 115 v welder that uses flux core wire. going to put it in garage to play with and learn how to weld. i am a 25 yr old farmer...that is the main reason i want to learn. which brand and which machine.thanks.
Reply:Go with a stick welder.  Wire welding in the low power units won't be of much use on most equipment you'll have to repair.  The metal's too thick to make satisfactory welds with a low powered unit.Low end brand name wire welders run about neck in neck price wise with low end 225amp stick welders.  The stick welder is good down to 12ga, and up to virtually any heavier plate with multiple passes.I didn't even consider a wire welder until around 5 or 6 years after I first started welding.  Just didn't need it enough to justify it."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Agree  with Sam. Get a stick welder. A common one for use on the farm is the Lincoln 225. Look around you'll find them on craiglist, in the newspaper, pennysaver magazine. Or they can be also found at Lowe's, Home Depot and most large hardware stores. My father started me welding on a Lincoln 225.They are great at repairing fractures on bucket loaders , frames on tractors, brushhogs, haybines, backhoes, and dozersCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:I would have to agree with the advice given. The Lincoln or Miller AC/DC stick welding machine will be excellent. You really want the DC. Many electrodes are DC preferred.A 220v Wire feed will cost much more.Buy the machine from a real welding store because they can awnswer many or your questions from now on. And you will see or meet other welders in your area to talk too and learn from.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 01-15-2009 at 08:29 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Another nod to the Lincoln 225 over the 110v wire feed.  I just helped my brother weld up the fractures and add gussets and beef up plates on his old bucket loader (just like Specter pointed out) to get it through another snow season. We had an old HH120 and a Lincoln 225 AC.  The Handler was nice for tacking things in place, but the Lincoln really did the job with the 1/4" plate.  The story on the Lincoln was that my dad bought it at the auction at the old farmstead my brother was buying, 13 years ago.  It wasn't used until we put a new plug on it, blew the dust out, cleaned up the stinger end and plugged it in.  The fan motor was a little sluggish in the cold, initially, but was spinning like it should as it warmed up.  I was pleased with how well it ran the 1/8" 7014 (all we had).  But, DC would have been even better. I think my dad may have paid $40 for it.  Good luck.
Reply:First thing that went in my old Lincoln was the fan.  Took near on 30 seconds to come up to speed when it was cold.  Second thing was the on/off switch.  The big one, not like they have nowdays.I really have to restore that old machine.  It gave me more than I deserved"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:i started with a 110v wire feeder.. i dont regert it, but i dont use it much any more--i stick or tig...you wont really go wrong with either machine  unless you are planning for it be ethe last and only welder you will ever want  or need  ...either is a fine start...think about a oxyaxetylene  torch setup cause it letes you cut, bend , weld, start the barbque , etcetcetc...welcome, haver fun, be safe..
Reply:I second the OA, its an indespensible tool for repair around the farm. You can weld:SteelStainlessAluminumBrassBronze CopperLeadMagnesiumCast IronYou can Braze:All of the above except Magnesium and leadTitanuimYou can Solder:All but Magnesium and leadYou can heat, form, heat-treat many material, and cut steel. You can work on many thicknesses from foil to a couple inches depending on your tank and torch size. Best bang for your buck. Next to that I would go with an AC/DC stick welder. The last thing I would buy is a 115v Mig, its the least versatile expenditure of money one can buy when it comes to welding equipment.-Aaron
