OK, New to the welding thing. So I will frequently turn to you for help. I traded a few power tool for a slightly used Lincoln 225 Arc Welder. The side pannel states 50 amps. I have a dedicated shop for woodworking and handyman stuff with a 100amp breaker with several open breakers. I put in a bridged 2x 50 amp breaker with 5' of 6/3 wire for my hook up. However the male end of the welder doesn't hook up, come to find out it is the 30 amp dryer style hook up.So tell me what I need. Am I on the right path. 50 amp breaks16/3 wire 50 oven hook up or will 30 amp accessories do it?Thanks, MedicLast edited by redneck medic; 02-04-2009 at 11:59 AM.
Reply:16 gauge is WAY too small. Get that out of their immediately. You only have 5 feet. Run 6 gauge to the outlet and change the connector on your welder to a 50 amp plug like it probably originally had. You can probably use 8ga but your run is only 5 feet!Last edited by bruceb; 02-04-2009 at 11:52 AM."Common sense is not very common"http://www.tahoekeyshome.com

Reply:Sorry that was a typo, it is 6 gauge wire, the home depot feller had to cut it for me. I know it is heavy enough because I had a hell of a time bending in the box. Its only 6ft because, the box sits next to my overhead door and I dont need to run it across the room.
Reply:Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a female dryer plug.  Problem solved.  A lot of the buzz boxes have the "dryer" type male plug on them for the home hobbiest weldor's.

Reply:Originally Posted by redneck medicIs the "dryer" type plug rated for 50amps? I thought it was 30a, that is where my question origanates.
Reply:I started out using dryer plugs for my first HF buzz box, but switched to welder plugs when better welder arrived and input currents went up.  The dryer male and female were rated to 30 amps and I don't remember ever seeing a dryer plug rated higher.TeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
