Like when I'm standing next to a tow truck and see what looks like stick welds on the frame - some are uniform and others look nasty. Like there was two different guys working side by side. One obviously more skilled, or one just hungover.Or a stainless stair railing in an office building. The TIG beads look perfect. Or they don't! I saw an aluminum ramp/walkway that had just plain messy joints on every weld. I wonder who is responsible for that passing inspection and being sold to the public. I know mass production is what it is, but yikes!!!Ever since I picked up this crazy hobby I've been noticing things that are invisible to the general public. Reply:I was having blood drawn once, and the woman thought I passed out because I started leaning forward. In a panic she asked "SIR, ARE YOU OK? STAY WITH ME." I laughed, said I was fine, but that the welds on the base of the chair were terrible. I have to say though, some of the most consistently good welds I've seen from a visual standpoint are on roller coasters. You can always pick out which ones were the field welds, and those guys do a pretty damn good job on both pipe and plate.

Reply:All the time. It's an addiction. I've done a fair amount of structural work over the years. When my DW and I go shopping, and I'm waiting near the front of the store for her to get done roaming the isles, I inspect the overhead steel. After staring for several minutes, it ain't long before I have a small crowd looking up. As for vehicles, I used to do repair welding for a couple of car haulers. Ever REALLY looked at one of those car carriers? While traveling, I don't want to be anywhere near one. Once had to repair one at a truck stop that the upper rear deck, with a new car on it, had collapsed on the new car below. I made them sign a waiver that I would not be held liable for any welding damage to any of the 4 new cars I would be working around. Can't walk by a railing without inspecting it. Or, anything else that's welded for that matter.Yup, you're hooked. Join the club.

Reply:working inside a barge an eagle eye foreman of mine was eyeballing a padeye [thats a lot of eyes]. A fellow "welder" installed the pad eye to lift a 400# piece of angle iron. he told the "welder" who was running the comealong to come down. He sent me up the scissor lift to check it out. the guy had welded all the way around a 1/2 x 4 padeye and had only hit the padeye with a 1/2 inch of weld. I rocked the padeye pretty hard a broke it off to embarrass the guy. There were seven of us under that padeye!I'm glad that foreman was keeping an eye on the welds.DAG NABIT, I left my tape on the saw.Wild Fire Welding |
