The fella who posted the sheet metal weld post made me think of this. I have seen a lot of people who believe they are making good vertical welds with the spray or globular transfer by doing almost like a manual pulse by pulling the trigger a crapload of times making a bunch of tacks with a vertical progression. I even know a guy who teaches that as vertical up welding for GMAW. I personally don't like it. I see it as nothing more than a bunch of tacks in the vertical position. I think the proper way to weld vertically is either with pulsed spray or short circuiting. What do you guys say? I say since spray and globular are limited to flat and horizontal positions, why even try to make a vertical weld with it?only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:in school we ran short circut uphill just like you would stick. you can do it in pulsed spray as well, but just tack welds sounds like a realy bad idea
Reply:I say since spray and globular are limited to flat and horizontal positions, why even try to make a vertical weld with it?WOW when did this happen? You mean to tell me you can't weld vertical with GMAW?
Reply:yeah i think so too. ive never seen this method in any book ive ever read. its just something ive seen a lot of ppl doing.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:sure you can run vertical with GMAW just not with spray.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:Bunch of tack welds in a row will get you a weld with no penetration and inadequate fusion and voids in the fill, in any postion or direction. Mig starts are always cold, so you want to do as little restarting as necessary. Now on sheetmetal, where you're not looking for penetration and may be just trying to not burn it all away, a series of tack welds is fine if you can't dial the machine down far enough and/or put enough of a heat sink on it to make a continuous bead. With thin metal that you might blow through, do your verticals down, not up.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op |
