This question is for the guys that weld a lot of stainless steel; When your welding stainless steel, how often do you encounter sugaring on the backside? I've got to weld a bracket for a boat in a couple days and I want it to look good when i'm done. It's 1/4" by 1" thick stock (4 welds).
Reply:only when over heated
Reply:I'm sure you won't sugar through 1/4 plate unless you bevel it. If you are going for a full pen. weld and are worried about sugar you could always purge the back side.
Reply:It only happens when you actually penetrate damn near through the base material, and there is no backpurge. You can't really sugar a T-joint weld badly, but you can sugar a lap weld or a butt weld. You should be OK.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:How would you back purge a piece of flat stock?
Reply:keep it cool, you wont sugar...  You can always backpurge as suggested before.
