Reply:Hougen.  Got 6 of them.2 Milwaukee's too but the hougens are always the go to's.  One of the hougens is at least 20 years old and still works great.I quit buying the hougen cutters though.   I get cutters through KBC tools for 1/4 the price that last just as long.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Hougen.  I will use any of them depending on weather I'm using a rotabroach cutter or a twist drill.  Our Milwaukees are variable speed with integral 3/4" drill chucks.  Our DeWalt has a swivel base, and will take rotabroach cutters or twist drills.   The Hougens are fairly new (least runout of all the mag drills we have) but only take cutters, one is a middle of the range and one HMD150 I think (it's the 1" right angle model).  If I was buying one myself, I'd look for through the tool coolant for rotabroach use.  Having a removable drill chuck is nice.  I have never managed to lift the magnets on the Milwaukees, with enough feed I have lifted the DeWalt and Hougen.  Swivel base is a take it or leave it feature for me, price would have to be near the fixed base for me to buy one with a swivel base.  If you see yourself needing to use it for sideways or overhead holes with any kind of frequency, get the lightest unit you can find without sacrificing magnet power and drill motor capacity.
Reply:thanks for all the great information.  Isnt the internet great i just found out what like 10 of you guys use or prefer.       so i think i will check out the milwukee since it seems to be the most popular for all around use.  I was hoping to maybe get one that you could chuck bits in but also use cutters etc.www.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:A 1/2" Rockwell on a Bux magnetic base  and a Magtron with a two speed transmission + variable speed for the rota broach cutters.

Reply:so i was bumping around and found this http://www.steelmax.com/d2-magnetic-base-drill  does anybody know much about steelmax?  i know several guys who have the saws and have put them through the paces.    i like that it has interchangable chuck and through the spindle lub for cutter use.  it is slightly heavy but to have a drill that can take twist bits up thru a 2 1/16 inch cutter would be nicewww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:I have the Milwaukee as well, no matter which one you choose , remember to use a safety chain and clamp when drilling other than flat, cord comes out or breaker trips drill goes boom, maybe foot goes ouch! and these babies are heavy , any drop from 4 feet or more is gonna damage and expensive tool,.
