My job is going to toss a shipping container that is 12X12X30.  It is made of 2X2 square tubing with a skin of sheet metal.  I asked about it, and was told if I can get it out of here I can have it. I have a place to put it that also has ELEC.Now I need to know if 12 X 30 is big enough for a start up shop?
Reply:Depends what you plan to do in it as a shop. I have looked at the 8'x'8' x 20' or 40'L containers for a shed. 12' would be even better,Few thoughts. 12'W x 12' h is an odd size to me. To wide to go down the road or by train, so I guess it was either built in place or you are near a port. The 12'w and h is also going to become an issue to move it. Width wise they can get a wide load permit and height wise they may need to move wires and so on. You will need a lowboy trailer to keep the height down. This will all cost $$$ so keep that in mind. Oh and figure a crane to load and unload it.Your other option will be to cut it and re weld it after you move the parts.I want to say the 8'x8'x40'ers ran $1000 used and the 20' long ones ran $1200 the last time I looked at one. Those generally don't need permits and some trucks are designed to drop them without special equipment. Just something to consider.
Reply:You can put a lot of stuff in that size box.  If it's free, I'd pull the trigger.See how much the moving costs, and permits run.  Might be better than buying a surplus container."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Cut a big rolling door type side door in it, full length lean-to on that side------------- perfect starter or temporary.
Reply:12x24 I think, is about the size of a standard single car garage! With that extra length of being 30', would even be better, and I have seen some pretty well put together  but tight shops in single car garages.Heck, my shop is only 21x24', and I manage quite well.Last edited by Ken Dennis; 03-07-2009 at 02:14 PM.#1. Reply:If it is 12' high, sitting on a lowboy trailer that has a deck hight of 18", it would be close to the max hight of 13' 6", just the width would need be worried about for a wide load.#1. Reply:Ken I have two add-ons that are 10x32 which is working out for me. There are some pics under my thread if you want to look. If you can get it home - take it.
Reply:Here is a link to what was in the box.  The box was made on site, toy put inside and then sent to us.http://www.techspex.com/techspex/mil...illing_id=4050All the sides and top are just bolted on.  So I would have them taken off and just have to move a 12' X 30 long.  Or I could ( crying while typing this) Cut it into 6X15 and just use a normal trailer.  Then weld it all back together.  I have to wait until Monday to get a price on moving it.
