How does everyone prevent rust when the welded project is better left in it's 'raw' natural state ??There are e few projects that I have in mind where the raw look of freshly welded steel is better than a primed and painted look, but rust will spoil that look. Is there a clear coating, do you spray it with oil or WD40 ? What is the process for treating steel this way ?Thanks..P.S. The project I want to build is a full sized welded steel human skeleton, should look cool hanging from a noose in my shed.
Reply:Yes you can clear coat it. Or, weld it from stainless or aluminum. MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I think car wax would be better.
Reply:Use a paste type car body wax, don't bother with the liquid or spray types, they might go on easier, but they don't last as long!A good old time favorite is good old Turtle wax paste! Its been around for what seems like forever, and holds up very well.#1. Reply:Before Clear coating or Wax make sure that the piece is clean- where cotton gloves to handle the piece as the Oil from your fingers will get transfered to the piece and you won't see the finger prints until after you Clear/Wax it.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:You can wire brush then wipe with oil and heat with a torch. Blacksmiths often just oil hot articles allowing the oil to burn/smoke on the surface. The finish is like a varnish but not as shiny and irregular, giving it a natural look.
Reply:This was sanded to shiny steel the I applied PERMA BLUE Liquid Gun Bluehttp://www.birchwoodcasey.com/sport/index.htmlThen heated with a Propane torch and applied Briwaxhttp://www.briwaxwoodcare.com/Works better if you leave some out in a dish so it turns into a paste. If you apply it and it boils off you are too hot. Most of the Color came from the Bluing but you can see some of the warmth that the brown from the Briwax added.Another trick I learned is to brush with a Brass BBQ brush after heating- the brass transfers to the piece.
