Bending with heat

Without an OXY set can you apply enough heat to bend a 1" x 3/8" steel bar with  LPG and a burner head ?
Reply:I don't think so, even if it is only 1" x 3/8". I don't remember the exact numbes but I don't think LPG burns hot enough to heat the metal enough. Just Wiki'd it - oxy-acetylene runs 5800 - 6300 degrees.... ok, can't find a temp rating on LPG burn, just that the outer flame is hotter than the inner cone. Wiki actually says LPG is used to heat steel before bending....I could swear, though, that I was taught it won't get hot enough.....Incredibly not helpful I know, sorry! I thought it'd be an easy question to answer....I have seen LPG torches used to pre-heat large buckets and their bracing though. Anybody else have a better answer?Ruth

Reply:You can get the steel hot enough with a large propane weed burner. I have seen small LPG burner forges using these. 50,000 BTU's will do that. However you most likely won't have great control over what you are heating. If you want to heat a 10"+ area it would work, but don't expect to heat a small area up unless you set up the "forge" correctly to limit the heat to the area you want.

Reply:Sure can.   Google forge burners. Simple and can be cheap to make.  I don't  know what you are doing.  Though, for simple angles bent in  1/2"  inch and thinner material (strap) can be bent cold pretty easily with a bending tool of some sort.  I would only fire up a forge if I were going to work the metal, like tapering and reshaping.Good luck.Last edited by tapwelder; 03-10-2009 at 09:58 PM.
