OK Stupid question, maybe.

Some of us were talking the other day about how they are now using a granite tops for the new table saws that are coming out. One of the guys wondered if you could use a granite top for welding on, providing you didn't have to ground to the table. What are the veiws of the more experinced people on this one. I think it could be done, but could the granite handle it?
Reply:Have you ever had HOT rock or cement explode in your face or knock holes in your hood? Usually from the slag melting out of a cut or washing a weld with a torch, but the point is, if you get that rock HOT enough it will hurt you! I wouldn't be interested in trying it myself. Reply:Yeah, rock-based product rapidly shattering from intense localized heat would NOT be fun.And there is a HUGE difference between putting a hot pan from the stove onto a stone-based trivet and having molten 2500F steel or a 5700F oxy-acetylene flame or a plasma jet hitting that stone.    The best laid schemes ... Reply:I can tell you that my farm is loaded with slate. You want to see and explosion try lining your bonfire pit with slate fill the pit with old pallets and stand FAR~~~~~~~ back. I have some pictures somewhere of that day. Reply:Lava rocks won't explode.  That is why you can heat them in a fire all day then make a sweat lodge and pour cold river water over the super-hot rocks and not worry about an explosion.If you take an ordinary non volcanic rock (such as granite) and do the same thing, then you will have a chipped tooth or be missing an eye or something like that because the rock will explode.
Reply:Exploding work bench.....wouldn't want to do too much hammering on it either. Imagine a big chunk of it breaking off taking with it the 400 lb anvil you were repairing.......OUCH.....MOTHER F&%#@&!Rotavia
Reply:When I worked with a mason we regularly flame finished granite. Basically you would heat the face with a rosebud to cause the face to spall and give you a rough non slip surface. There was a definite trick to doing this right, just enough heat to get the saw cut surface to flake, but not enough to cause damage or injury. Face shields were a definite requirement.

Reply:I was thinking they would probably be very slick and smooth. A bit heavy for me to lug around on my truck however.
Reply:one of the best things about a steel table is you can tack yer work to it in the position you want..some stuff thats irregulat is near impossible to clamp, its needsto be  tacked down...
