I bought a 110 volt MIG welder the other day. I have a full helmet coming in the mail, but for time being I have a pair of goggles with #10 lenses. They protected my eyes very nicely yesterday. Unfortunately, I was not smart enough to cover my face and so I have a nice little (sun)burn. I need to weld some more today but I want to make sure I don't make the burn any worse. Can I prevent a burn by covering my face with clothing. Would a ski mask or neckwarmer over my face prevent that area from burning?
Reply:Absolutely not. One wayward spark and you'll turn yourself into a polyester candle.
Reply:I was talking about UV burn, not a direct fire but I get your point.I think I'm going to fashion a shield out of some thin sheet metal with holes cut out and the goggles strapped to the metal. That sounds like a better idea.
Reply:Leather or cotton would work.Good thing you were not stick welding!David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Made a pancake hood out of a pair of goggles and a piece of cardboard once, worked well in the tight space it was intended for.- If you can jump across it you can weld it!  - anonymous old boilermaker
Reply:Wasn't there a Scorpions album jacket depicting some one wearing underwear on their head with a pair of welding goggles or something goofy like that ??MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Nevermind.  I was thinking of their album Blackout.   I can't exactly tell what it is he's wearing, but it's not underwear and welding goggles, though it does look almost as goofy.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Ummmm, part of welding is to get and USE the appropriate safety gear as well as the welding machine(s).Like welding gloves and welding helmet(s)!!Just go to a local store and buy a welding helmet.  LWS or Lowes or HomeDepot or HarborFreight -all- should have various stuff available.  Or go on-line and buy.Or just wait the day or whatever until your already ordered helmet shows up.A brown paper bag, some duct tape, and a pair of welding goggles does NOT make a welding helmet!  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:How about a Nixon mask over his goggles to prevent burn?

Reply:I've successfully done all the welding I needed to do on this car. The welds went very, very well. I made sure to get the metal flawlessly clean and my MIG machine rewarded me in return.I've seen a lot of basic welding masks that you hold up. I took a piece of cardboard and cut eye holes in it. I then put on the goggles and held the cardboard over my face. It very nicely protected my face for two hours of welding. No burn at all! It's clumsier than a helmet but it protected me very well. Now I can wait until the helmet arrives. And yes, I do have proper welding gloves.
