Still brand sticking new.Just getting started again in school as we are allowed to practice again. This is a union trade school. Technically I'm not in welding class but, have been given permission to attempt to learn what I can at my own pace. When I last left off; they told me I could start vertical welding using stick at 70amps. 6010 or 6011...can never remember. The metal is most likely mild steel a 1/4" thick...slightly rounded.I can do a good job on horizontal using sort of a dig, back, dig, back motion.Trying that on vert working my way up from bottom results in beads which look more like melted candle wax than like good welds. Can you recommend a pattern "basic" to use? Start from top or bottom? Temp? I understand how the weld pool should look when doing horiz but, am amiss as to how it should on the vert.Thank you. HAPPY WELDING UALL
Reply:you gotta resist gravity.try to hold a real short arc, as though you were pushing the puddle up with the rod. you'll see that if you get too long an arc  the puddle will run down between the elelctrode and the metal.point the rod slightly up .
Reply:That makes sense. I have been getting the arc away from the workpiece around an eighth of an inch on the motion preceding the dig in upwards direction.Have had the feeling that I was keeping the stick over the weld pool for too long before dig also.Did do a little better at practice yesterday by picking up the pace.My vertical beads still do not come close to resembling my horizontal beads. The instructor also stated that I am taking my dig too far in the upwards direction.I will post pictures of my next practice work piece around Wednesday of next week. HAPPY WELDING UALL

Reply:^^^ Not with 6010 it won't! :-)I use a triangular motion.  Typically you can get away with a bit more heat/slower movement in the field than you can in a shop class.  Small coupons take away that heat sink effect. If you THINK its about to give way, just stop and let it cool down.  That's the only way you'll avoid the dreaded globs.
Reply:Celluostic rods, IE 10 or 11 series are downhill rods.  Lo-Hi's are uphill, like 7018's.  I have no problems running downhill but like you uphill is a bitch.
Reply:I actually prefer welding uphill with a 6011. I use a whipping motion to build a little shelf, let it cool, and put another on top.I feel like I have better control of things going uphill rather than down.
Reply:Thoughts/Observations since last post and reading answers since:I thought about how I am having a hard time seeing the weld puddle and wondering if I should change my stance so that I am looking at the bead below the stick instead of from above.Did find that my beads were getting "gloppier" as I decreased temp. Started at 80 and may have gone to 50 amps.Yes I am welding with 6010's and yes I guess I'd like to try 7018's!about the upside down v's ...Should I be making a pattern using these? Like more time on the sides than on the metal? HAPPY WELDING UALL
Reply:Sorry did not get any pics of practice sessions last week will try tomorrow. Also thinking bout trying some them patterns out. HAPPY WELDING UALL

Reply:i always weld in a u shape on verticals. it always works for me.
Reply:ok with 5p or 6010 ,6011 to go up i personally go 1/2 to 3/4 above my puddle making a v it works very well and also if you run lh or 7018 down hill you should stop welding cause that makes good welders look bad up hill only run your uphill root making u shape or a v shaper and cover in a z
Reply:I like the J-whip for 6010/11 up hill.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Try making a weld in a prepped joint. It's easier than just running a bead on a flat piece of plate. Get good with 6011 before trying 7018.
