Hello, I am new to this forum.  I found it while trying to find someone in my area that can do some custom metal work.  I live just outside of Louisville, KY and have a small, reletively simple (I think) bracket I need made.  I have examples of brackets which are close to what I need.  The brackets are about 4" X 6" of .080 thick steel.  There are a few bends (all 90 degrees) and some cuts and holes.  I can post pictures if needed. If there is anyone here who is in the area (or knows someone who is) and feels they can help I would be truely grateful. Thanks,Steve
Reply:Ok, here are some pictures of the bracket I need made.  These first few are just different angles of the same piece.Although this is a bad piture it does do a good job of showing the detail on the "dogleg" in the arm.And here is that same picture with my feable attempts to modify it to show a modification to the bracket I will need.  The modification required is simply to remove the "dogleg".The only holes in the bracket that are important to me (and therefore need to be duplicated) are:The large center cutoutThe large round hole near the topThe holes on the legsI will need 12 of these that are identical (with the dogleg) and 12 of the modified (dogleg straightened out). Thanks,Steve
Reply:Hi steve, i have never posted here either. I live close to Louisville as well. There is a place on Illinois Ave that i used to have custom enclosures made. It is called Diversified sheet metal. Give them a call. They should be able to do what you need.

Reply:It doesn't look that intricate.  Perhaps somebody could make it in multiple parts?  A machine shop, or sheet metal shop, perhaps.  Even some auto shop that has a  welder.  It would probably be cheaper for a smaller order.
Reply:Originally Posted by sredmyerWell I contacted them but unfortunately they do not think they would be able to do it. They said it would need to be laser or water jet cut and they do not have that equipment. They did however point me toward another outfit which is in Jeffersonville, IN. I contacted them and they say they can do it but wont even quote it with out drawings. They are not interested in making it from the example unit I have.So I either need more ideas or I need to find someone who can make the drawings for me. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks,Steve

Reply:Originally Posted by roadkillbobbHolly cow.. just smack the braket you have out flat with a hammer and trace it out on paper with dimmensions and send it off for a quote and then just bend the new pieces on a brake. a machine mounted plazma cutter could probably cut it out, depends how smooth the sides have tobe..
Reply:What are you willing to spend?  Would you be willing to ship the parts you have to somebody to be measured and drawn up in CAD?

Reply:Originally Posted by sredmyerExcelent idea I have even considered doing just that (banging it flat that is).  However, this is the only one of these brackets I have and I can not afford to screw it up.  If doing that does not get me what I want...I no longer have a model that some competent metal fabricator could use.  Therefore, such a plan, though not out of the question, would be my last resort. As for cutting it out with a machine mounted plasma cutter...where do I find the guy who has one...cuz I sure dont.Steve
Reply:Cut a block of wood or steel to fit exactly inside mark holes and the pattern. The block could also serve as a bending die. As far as welding, distortion wouldn't be a problem. You just need to find somebody willing and able to do it.  Any Vocational schools in your area (a good project for a student)?  Race car fabricator (they build brackets)?Good luck

Reply:The idea of flattening it out is a good idea. If you could trace it out onto paper then scan it into  a cnc  machine/ plasma table it wouldn't be that hard to do it. It would then be cut out of steel and bent into shape with a metal brake.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
