General welding question sheet metal

I have a quick question,I havent been welding for long maybe 16 hours total so im very new.I learned a introduction to welding at my auto mechanic school and i really enjoyed it.Im working on my 1977 chevy blazer quarter panel.There some rust holes in the wheel well,typical spot.I was trying to weld the holes there very small,I touch the metal,with then a half of a second it burns right through the metal.I figured i would put a spot weld then slowly go around it with a c motion feeling in the hole.It did work on my floor alittle but I was just wondering if i was doing something wrong or  is the metal to thin because of rust or ?.Im using a mig 90 amp chicago electric flux wire welder.Its a electric welder no gas.Duty cycle: 10% @ 80 amps, 18% @ 60 amps Wire capacity: 0.030.It is from harbor freight.It has two settings min and max im on the min setting with a speed of 5.Any helpful information would be greatly apprecaited.I know nothing about welders so any setting info would also be helpful.Thank you
Reply:rusty metal doesnt weld, especially thin sheet metal, get some new sheet metal and you will have to cut OUT the old rust till you get to sturdy metal that can be grinded clean then you should have half a chance on getting it done, then cut plate from the new metal and weld clean shiny metal to clean shiny metal..settings , try starting low and see how it welds.
Reply:what I have been doing to fill up the bubba holes in my 48 willys jeep is I went to lowes and bought a 1 foot piece of 1" copper tubing and flattened it out and I use that as a backer. works great! bubba holes are gone  LOL

Reply:Keep in mind that if you have say a 3/16 bubbly spot of rust showing you probably have an inch or two of marginal metal on the other side.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
