It's only taken about 2 months, but finally worked out why some of my welds were not behaving like others. All my welding with my MIG, I have just clamped my lead earth wire from my mig to the leg of my work bench. 75% of the time it all works nicely, but sometimes the weld spits and farts and carries on.Today I discovered that if I clamp directly to my work piece all these problems go away and the welds are a work of art (sort of).Never realized how important it was till now.
Reply:Even better if you can clean the area you clamp to. You need good contact.
Reply:Clean grounding clamp area is Very Important. I also find that have the grounding clamp close to the welding area also gives a clean consistent weld.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Good lesson. Also, remember keep the current from gong across hinges and bearings--ground and weld on the same side of the bearing. |
