I know there will be a lot of answer to this, but...  If you could throw only one book (or video) to a guy and say "Go learn to weld", what would that book (or video) be?And please exclude anything from Robert Finch.  I find his books to be lacking on so many levels. (I hope he's not on this forum, that would be embarrassing)

Reply:Ive got the "Modern Welding" book.  Its the older version.  Its pretty good especially for stick becuase its the older version.  I was in tractor supply and picked up book yesterday it was from motorbooks.  www.motorbooks.com.  I believe it was called "How to Weld".  It looked like a pretty good book with everything in it.
Reply:Can you get 'The Bible" from Lincoln's website?
Reply:and how much does it cost?

Reply:I have Lincoln's 'New Lessons In Arc Welding', originally published in the 40's, which seems to be a condensed version of 'the bible' aka 'Procedure Handbook Of Arc Welding'.  My book is an updated version from the 1970's.  It covers all the necessary stuff without getting too confuzing.  I would like to have 'the bible' but haven't ran accross one for sale so far.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I bought Lincoln's Procedure Handbook (14th edition) a couple months ago and find it very comprehensive and not just about arc welding. Many of these principles can be applied to all welding techniques. At over 700 pages, it is a bargain for $25. SteveJunkYard Tools .com
Reply:Is it more than just arc?  Does it cover tig/mig/flux?

Reply:Well, that remains to be seen. I’ve gone through many books and videos, no one is the be all end all source of information. There is good, better, best, however there is always some little tidbit of information that one will find that the other books miss out on.Case in point, I could never get flux core beads to look as good as Mig, then I saw the Steve Bilel videos. I was trying to make the flux puddle look like the Mig puddle. The Miller book goes into detail not found elsewhere, I ended up with a small library.
Reply:i once heard on jesse james in an interview get asked how he learned to do so many different things and he replied " i read and looked at every book and picture i could get my hands on about welding metal work metallurgy engines etc."   so i take that aproach there is no one book but all books videos and this website.  I constantly learn different ways to do things on here every day.www.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:i got a copy of  US Navy metalworking courses. i got it from an aquaintance a couple of years ago and has come in handy. i guess one day i should sit back a read the darn thing...lolll and i wouldn't have to come on here and harass people to teach me stuff....loll  i think there is even a chapter that tells ya how to rebuild a ship with paper clips and a book of matches...loll

Reply:Fastest way to learn welding is to watch MacGeyver, season one and 2......Lincoln and Miller both have basic welding books available online that you can download and either print or read at your leisure. Very good books, and they cover most of the basics well, as well as some mildly advanced stuff. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:Hobart has a line of soft cover booklets that cover each process independently.  If you only want to know stick or wire or tig, you can get the issue that covers that technique.  They have examples and exercises to follow for different materials and positions.  We used them at the community college to work through the course material. There is also a thick volume that is probably as complete as any single source I've seen.  It's called Modern Welding Technology by Cary Helzer.  It's published by Prentice Hall.  You can get it on the internet for somewhere around $70-80.  It was $115 through the school bookstore.

Reply:I want the book for reference use.  I think I will get the Lincoln book.  Everyone seems to refer to that alot.""Modern Welding" by Althouse/Turnquist/Bowditch is pretty good."Great Book, well written along with a lot of current "no-no's" (Asbestos blankets, etc.)  Some of the data is somewhat dated, (Heliarc) yet the theories contained therein are timeless and well explained.Cav Up!Always remember Friends and Neighbors, that since 9/12/2001 the American people have slept peacefully at night because there are Rough Cavalrymen overseas doing violence on their behalf.Last edited by Cavmastergunner; 06-24-2009 at 10:08 PM.
Reply:Buy the Procedure book directly from Lincoln for $25.00. It is $40-50 at Amazon and other on-line stores. I don't know why. Also, if you look around long enough on the Miller Website you will find the "Miller Student Training Package" for $25. It has about 10 nice paperback books on  Stick, Tig, Mig, Metals, etc. Some of them are $25 apiece individually. It even includes all 3 pocket calculators. I think they include shipping if I remember right. It comes in a reusable cardboard box to keep the books clean on your shop shelf. You can order at:http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...d=211630&qty=1Here is what you get:http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/tools/#booksScroll to the bottom to see the Training Packages.Last edited by wb4rt; 06-25-2009 at 08:29 AM.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:gotta agree with all that said the Lincoln procedure book. for reference you'll not find anything that contains this much info. only draw back is it can be a tough read in sections without a welding background, but nothing else covers as much in as much detail. there's a lotta good books out there but the lincoln has the most bang for the buck, i've got 3, my oldest being a 71' edition.also have a full set of oxy-fuel and stick welding Navy training books from the 40's and 50's. the stick training manuals are ok but the oxy-fuel manuals are some of the best i've come across!but we have books and books going back to the 60's, 70's and 80's at school, amazing stuff in some of those old books! i find myself collecting those old welding books as over the years i have accumulated stacks of them at the house.johnjohnwelding instructorwww.williamrmoore.orgMooreTech College of Technologywelder/fabricatorJGWilson, Inc.www.jgwilson.com

Reply:Hey, Craig.  You're welcome. That is a real bargain. Lots of material for $25.00, but you kind of have to stumble upon it. Seems like they would highlight that, especially for new welders. I read almost all the books from cover to cover.I thought maybe you would have to prove you were taking a welding course or something, but they took my order and shipped it right away.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:I'm sure it's in the mfrs best interest to get the material down to those who will use it, at a price that will make it irresistible.
