I am very new to welding.  I have always had an interest, but never taken the time.  Recently, someone gave me this welder to help me get started.  I do not know what brand or type it is.  If you can identify if from the pictures I would be very appreciative.  The brand name is mostly rusted off the front.  The word "AC Carbon Arc Torch" and "250 Amp" are still visible.  Some general labeling and instructions are partially visible on the front cover.  I am hoping someone can identify it so that I might can find more information about it and possibly an old manual.  Thank you very much for your help.  Any advice for a "green" beginner is also welcome!  Thanks!
Reply:I remember an old monkey wards welder that looked about like that from the late-late 60's to early 70's. Who made their welders back then??
Reply:Nice welder. 250volt DC, too.   Does it work.  You might find a schematic inside, it might have a name on it.  Looks like it needs to be taken apart just to be clean and tighten stuff, anyway.  Make sure the fan works.  Don't get too hung up on not having a manual, Not much info. in them for stick welder.  Most information is on the machine.  The lever to the right is a lock, it keeps amp lever from moving while welding.  There is a lot of vibration when welding, hence the name "buzz box".It could be a really frustrating experience if  you don't have good electrical contact in the machine or at the lugs or leads or ground or stinger.  So have it cleaned, serviced.  good luck
Reply:Thank you very much for your help.  If any others have comments, I would still appreciate you taking a look. As you suggested, I will try to clean the welder up first before I try it.  I do not know for sure that it works yet since I just got it.  Thank you for taking the time to help out.

Reply:The only other marking is the serial number on the back.  It says W419178.  I will try to open this up soon to clean it and see what else I can find inside.  I did also post this in the link you described.  Thanks again.

Reply:Well, I was editing the first shot I'd attached to post #7 last night when it either timed out or the system crashed, 'cause I couldn't get back on the website at all, this after I'd already added post #8. Anyway, here is the edited first shot with contrast reduced:[The tube on the handle was added, not original] Attached Images
Reply:Looks like a nice little compact machine with good power output, What is the duty cycle rated for ??"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:If you can see the red bands next to the amperage control, they show 100% duty for up to ~125 amps. Notice that it's max of 250 is for both AC and DC.
Reply:Quite a difference in those two front panels... If I had it & it worked I'd say it was a keeper. Couldn't an overlay be printed up of the front panel? At the least print it out and save the information.Pretty lucky someone has pictures of that specific machine in such detail.

Reply:I see those on ebay from time to time...they usually go cheap.
Reply:In the recent thread about the carbon arc torches, I believe someone stated that he'd done a fairly thorough search for places to buy them, and hardly found anyone who knew what they were, let alone had one for sale---but my memory 'ain't perfect' so you might do well to first search here to confirm my recollection, then start checking garage sales, flea markets, Craigslist and EBay. It would be fairly easy to copy, in a home shop, the copper parts of one like mine, and getting a small run of the 'plastic' parts might not be that bad, if someone wanted to have a small side business.
Reply:Newelder check your PM's ...I sent you a link...I think it's what you wanted
