Good evening.I recently purchased a 1998 Lincoln Ranger 8 with an 18hp Kohler motor. This is a giant step up from the Handler 125ez I have been using for about 4 months. My question is, how do you select polarity? This new (to me) Lincoln has AC, DC+, and DC-. I have searched this topic and all that I have managed to find that is useful is that if the part/machine you are welding is liable to generate static electricity then use AC.My welds so far have been fair. I purchased the machine 3 July. Today was the first day I really got to use it, and built a lead holder, followed by a spent electrode holder made of 1/4x1" strap iron and an old stainless steel coffee mug. DC+ seems to be the best bet. I have produced "pretty" welds using it with 6011. Any suggestions? Thank you,-Grant
Reply:On stick most rods run DC+ 6010, 7018.Some will run AC 6011, 6013, 7014 and some 7018 but they will also run DC+ as well and frequently better than on AC.How to set for a given rod is listed on the rod box as well as the amp range.Mig needs DC+ while FC usually required DC- if you are using a wire feeder with the machine.Tig would be DC- for steel and SS.
