my 1/4 top top on my table is warping like crazy.  It wasn't welded down to the frame because i didn't know if i wanted a top all the time... and i was majorly lacking in welding skillz.  Its just clamped down with a couple of heavy duty clamps along one of the 4 feet edge.  is this why it warped, because its not welded down?Well, I know I want a top all the time now.  since i'm so afraid of it warping again, I'm thinking about getting a 1/2 inch thick (2x4 feet) and got a quote from a local supply: $95 (hot rolled).do you think 1/2 inch is over kill?if i had someone weld the top for me, would it have prevented the warpage?the supplier says they'll "sheer" the 1/2 inch plate to the size i want, do you think this will have an effect on the flatness of the plate?
Reply:You'd be suprised how little heat it really takes to hump a plate like that if it isn't restrained.
Reply:Honestly, you should look into a top at least 3/4 thick and if possible have it ground on one sideto help with set up. Mine is that way and I haven't had any problems. A few good 1 inch welds on the corners and maybe 1 on the center lines should suffice. Also, have at least 3 inches of overhangto help with clamping. Later...
