Working on getting my DX running, i'm now ready to try the TIG functions, I need a torch. and there are a lot out there, I believe this DX is a 250 or 300 amp unit. early DX AC/DC/CC squarewave, some of you guys may remember my "reassembly" problems last week. What size torch ya think i should get???? I have very little tig experience but I have made some bird droppings..........
Reply:there are 2 main sizes17, 18, 26 (thats the big size)9 and 20 (small size)18 and 20 are water cooledthe rest are air cooledpick the size you like/need (there are variations on the amp ratings)then assuming that you start with a air cooled one, but step up to a water cooler later then your cups and collets will interchange.you seem to have 300A available and if you do any 1/4" alum or more youl need some of that amps.I have a similar set up - 300A ac/dc and went with the 26 aircooled torch for now and will step up to a watercooled 18 (350A ) torch sometime when i build my coolerBut the 20 torches (250A water cooled i think ) are very sexy and piontable.down side is if you dont go water cooled from the start then the 9 torch is only rated to 100A AC.lots of info:http://www.weldcraft.com/products/wp-series/your ball!G
Reply:I run a wp-20 and am very happy with it, small and light (very manuaverable) and it can handle 250A very well. I doubt you will need to go past that, as I have done some very heavy aluminum with that torch.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:Weld-Tec makes a WT-20H which is sized like a WP-20 but is rated for 300A. Uses the same consumables as the 20 Series, but can also take a 5/32 collet and tungsten. I have one with the rubber hoses and really like it.Then there's the Speedway SW 320 (also made by Weld-Tec). Also uses 20 series consumables and is rated to 320A. Comes standard with the heavy duty rubber hoses. Have a couple of them and they're awesome. Handle's a little larger than that on the WT-20H.I use these two torches on my Sync 250.Also have a Weld-Tec WT-20F (225A) which has the 25' rubber hoses and a flex head. This is the torch I use most of the time on the Dynasty 200 in the shop. For field work I normally just drag a 25' WP 9 with the Dynasty. If you're planning to be doing much aluminum over 1/8" or anything over 150A, I suggest you look seriously at a water cooled torch. Even the larger air cooled torches will get hot when run at those amps continuously. Plus the water cooled torches are much smaller and easier to get into tight spots.Lots of choices. Your wallet will decide which way you want to go. I just mentioned those two 20 series torches because they're both rated at over 300A.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I second the WP-20, used it for years small light only real down side is you need a cooler and i have used it to the max of what my 250 puts out and never gave me any problems.......BrandonLincoln Tombstone 225 A/C Steel StickerOld Victor O2/Acetylene setupMiller Syncrowave 250 Tig/PC-300 PulserMiller Millermatic 212 Mig HTP Invertatig 201 Giant Teck D50 Plasma cutterLots of HF grinders
Reply:I'll second (or third or fourth) the WP-20 recommendation. It's our most popular torch. You won't need a water cooler.... though you will need a water source and fittings, and hoses, etc. A Water Cooler would be optimal, however.Don't forget you can build your own as well... may be a good way to practice your TIG welding :-)Here's an article about building a water cooler, and explains some of the basics of hooking up your torch to a spigot:http://www.thefabricator.com/ArcWeld...le.cfm?ID=1275Here's an article about TIG Torch maintenance you may find useful:http://www.thefabricator.com/Consuma...le.cfm?ID=2214Hope that helps!-----------------------Carmen Electrodewww.CarmenElectrode.comand the boss blogs at www.JoeWelder.comall powered by www.Arc-Zone.com |
