I got a HF autodarking helmet. its my second one, but I dont recall having this problem with the other one.  No matter what the settings I can hardly see the the sparks comming off the welder.  I flips back to and forth between dark and light perfectly.  The dark is way too dark.  any have any ideas?ThanksNick

Reply:Yeah, buy a quality lense and you won't have that problem.   Try a Jackson, Huntsman, Miller, Speedglas or Optrel... Reply:I take it that it’s the same model and adjustable. Self powered or battery? If it’s self powered, set in the sun to charge the internal batteries, half hour will due. If that doesn’t help, head to the Post Office and send it back.

Reply:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ght=Blue+Flame has answered my question since I was using the lowest setting on my welder which is a 110v, there was not enough light.  So I should use a light behind me to lighten up the area on those settings

Reply:I wouldn't trust my eyes to an HF auto-lens.  I've used cheap lenses before that didn't darken quick enough, and at the end of the day ended up with burning eyes.My employer at the time had a ton of cheap ones, and I went and bought a $20 non-auto helmet from the local farm supply store and used that instead.  My eyes weren't sore at the end of the day anymore.I have a Miller Elite now, and my eyes don't get sore.  You get what you pay for, and it's not worth skimping on safety equipment.
Reply:I have that exact helmet and after changing the dial to the lightest shade, can see fairly well.  Seems that the overall shade level might be higher than what is normally found for that model.  And ditto the backlighting getting into the helmet...don't ask me how I found out .  I'm new at all this welding stuff and having a blast.  But... I might be using a too light a shade ?????
Reply:Get your money back.
Reply:If your helmet is getting too warm,   it can make it get darker.  The HF helmet is fine...Plenty of pros here have one.   I have had one for 6 years..A lot of other guys I know have them and they hold up fine..Your eyes won't get sore with this helmet unless something is wrong.   If it indeed is a problem, HF will warranty it if its still in warranty no questions asked.  It has a 1/25000 darkening speed which is plenty fast...or they used to anyway.Check out the other threads about the HF helmets.  There's plenty of info about them.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Yea I've noticed some helmets with 1/10000,1/12000 or 1/25000,does that mean the 1/250000 autodarks quicker and does this make any difference?Drink a Guinness Draught....Millermatic 140Do you still rememberDecember's foggy freeze --when the ice thatclings on to your beard isscreaming agony.
Reply:Not all of the HF helmets are 1/25000th.  Some of them are 2ms, which is 1/500th.

Reply:Desert,My only complaint, well two, really is that the head gear is intolerable, and the helmet which is actually a Moresafe design is heavy and keeps sliding down while I am positioning or chipping or whatever.  When its down and taking care of business,  it does a wonderful job. But if I have the helmet tight enough to stay up,  I nod my head and the helmet flips off....The post that was referred to has been deleted.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:My helmet weighed in on the kitchen scales at 1lb 8 ounces.Well as long as I am welding, the weight doesn't bother me...Some times I get so tired I won't even bother to lift it up when I am through...I just keep working with it down....no reason to lift it up if it will flop back down..The HaloX are much lighter...but I have seen some of them that seem to be too flexible and some destroyed...I guess I don't like the feel after having a friends of mines with  Boss filter in one on for a quick try out.  The adjustment holes on the side of his helmet where the tabs on the gear fits stripped out because of the softness and flexibility of the helmet. He too had to tighten his way up to keep his from flipping down.  A screw fixed the problem...But that shouldn't have happened.  I blame it on the head gear...I had the same problem with my full view Jackson with standard lens... until I changed to a generic head gear replacement...It works a lot better...Funny thing...the HF headgear is about the most comfortable and serviceable that I have  tried...except maybe speedglas....Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXTi have a old (bout 8 yrs now ) flip front helmet with a $100 AD lenses in itshade 11.where i work they gave me a speed glass to use shade 10have had that thing for about 7 weeks keep seeing stars every timei finish a run. took my old spatter burned helmet in to work and have neverlooked back.
Reply:Yeah the Halo-X is flexy.   Hasn't caused me any problems though, very happy with it.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I use my regular fixed lens hoods once in a while, usually whenever the battery in the auto dark goes dead and I don't happen to have batteries on me.   Manual hoods work fine, they're just more tiring on the neck and slower to use, if you got a whole lotta welding to get done in a hurry.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
