Can this cracked exhaust pipe be welded?

Hello, I was referred here by a fellow member at MercedesShop.com when I posted a photo of a crack in my exhaust pipe, where it meets the center muffler.  A photo is attached.  As you can see, the crack is on the existing weld.  It is relatively fresh, the result of my tailpipe hangars breaking, causing the exhaust to flex (and support its own weight), and the crack to form.  The rust you see is superficial,and  the dark residue on the lower portion of the muffler is blown-back oil from previous leak.  Thanks for your attention and any feedback you provide will be appreciated. Reply:If you can get the metal to clean up shiny and have enough metal left I would say yes. If it is for an old clunker I would not put alot of money into the thing.
Reply:Just for S&G's.  Go out an price the "right" fix on a modern exhaust system where the convertor is.  It generally is a solid setup from manifold to muffler.It is ONE HECK OF AN EXPENSIVE PROPOSITION (aw crap, now I'm yellin')Maybe near 3-6 C notes.  Aftermarket convertors, cobbled in, are generally the only cost effective alternative.Or trade the car in every few years"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yes it can be welded IF the mig gun fits in there.  It would be better to cut the pipe off with a sawzall, install a short piece and weld it to the muffler and the pipe.  I do a lot of em.If it has to come off the car, its a bigger job of course.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
