Here are the completed railing I did this last fall.  I went out last weekend to take this pictures.  This is just after a snow so maybe the pictures aren't the best.  It was a fun project.  The railings frame a new set of stairs and walkway that will soon go to a new pool.  The Challange was the different elevations and the curving about the small hill.  I think not bad for the very first time I ever built anything. Reply:Boy for your first project you picked a duzy. Looks good. What's the white stuff all over the sidewalk and yard
Reply:Great looking project Tom !
Reply:Nice.  Where did you get the dome pipe ends?  If you reduce your pics. a little more we won't have too scoot over our screens to read the text.  I use MS photo to reduce the photos.  It gives size in pixels, and I usually make the X dim about 600 - 650 pixels.  It really doesn't change the quality much.
Reply:Looks like the 2nd project oughta be a rail type elevator to get back & forth to the pond.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Thanks guys.  Since then I have made about 15 handrails like that one, and a dozen railings up some steps and around porches.  I weld and build something almost everyday.  I have to say, the people on this forum have helped me more then I could ever say.  So I"ll just say thanks.Fla Jim,  That white stuff is snow and today it's cold snow.  If you put your hand in your freezer and leave it there for a few hours, you'd understand why I use my torch to cut most things lately instead of using a saw.  Any kind of fire is a good thing. Thanks Jim314, I am a stick man to, but I did use my Clarke mig to build that hand rail.  I had to build that on sight.  On that day is was mid 80's, sunny and took about 3 hours.1grnlwn, Those are dome pipe ends. I got them from my nephew's welding shop.  He has a shop that does railings and construction type beams.  He has a lot of welders.  Millermatic 300, Millermatic 250 regency.  A big Miller 304 something, and a Millermatic 135, 2 trailblazers, and one big monster that he had to rewire his shop for, I think it's a stick welder and they use it with a stud gun mostly.  I don't know what size it is but I think it said once when I looked, maybe something like 1200 amps.  I"m not real sure but it looks like an armored car anyway, both in size and shape
Reply:Slag - doesn't look like you were bashfull picking that as the first project.  Looks great.  How long it take?
Reply:Junk, thanks.  The post took about 2 hours to make and to hang the "hangers" onto.  Setting them was pretty easy because the ground was soft because of digging for the cement before hand.  Setting the post with the hangers on them already took about a couple hours.I made the end railings, the J shaped hooks, in my shop before I took the railings to the site.  Laying out the rail, bending to the post and welding it all together took me about 3 hours.  So all together, about 6  or 7 hours.  The owner didn't know what color he wanted and after he desided that any color would be too hot in the sun, I painted it white and on a hot day, it's cool to the touch.
