Reply:Yeh I do notice the one boy had his glasses on the littlest is a little stubborn with some things looks like I'll have to talk to him. He started helping the older boy, I guess he wanted to make some money too.My oldest boy is 14 and he helps with deburring or spatter removal, drilling and sawing. He has welded some with tig and mig. Actually a job I did a month ago he helped after school tacking parts on the far side of a project and it was a great help, saved me from walking back and forth. Yet his welding skills are not there yet to let go although he thinks he's doing ok, but in time.He says I'm not going to do what you do dad for work, I tell him at least you'll know how to use a tool and work with the hands, then I say, I need you lets go kid. I tell him of all the men and what there doing at their home, such as setting up a shop and the enjoyment they have at night and weekends. Whatever he does in the future I'm going to make sure all my boys know how to handle machinery and be at least a little mechanically inclined.Last edited by Jerry; 01-27-2004 at 03:43 PM.J P Streets Welding LLC

Reply:Jerry;Seeing your helpers brings back memories. All three of my sons started out helping me in the shop. The oldest got interested in welding. Took it in High School, went to Technical school for two years. He was a "VICA" National champ for two years, one in High school, one at P-Tec. He's now a journeyman Millwright, running a crew, and making obscene ammounts of money. #2 and #3 son's are machinist's, making a good living.#3 son goes out to power plant outages on his vacation and runs a Lazer guided portable mill. He's milling turbine journals for an upgrade to a bigger rotor. These days it's sure good to see you teaching the kids a work ethic.
Reply:Thanks Wheat and Planet x. Hey Jim sounds like you did good bringing up your boys. Its a great feeling I have as I build my business, that I could provide for them a possibility of making a living while in the teen years and being close to them working together. Also to what the future holds as business grows maybe they would want to help take this as far as I can. Right now its one week at a time as it builds, I only buy what I have a good amount of work for otherwise I farm it out.J P Streets Welding LLC |
