Customer calls me and asks if I can build a table fpr his patio. He's thinkin in area of 10 to 12 ft long with expanded metal top. Doesnt care how heavy it is and wants it powder coated.  I am just wonderingif any of you could throw some ideas/pictures of one that you may have made in my direction.  I think I'd like to make this out of pipe or sqaure tube but open for suggestions.
Reply:Take a look at the stuff by "Plantation Patterns" at depot and target. They frame the outside using angle, and weld the expanded metal to the underside for a nice clean edge.
Reply:Do they want it round or square?  If square it will be easy to make. I have made them using old metal bedframes and expanded metal in sheets from my local metal supplier. Use a metal cutting chopsaw to do the corners at fitted 45 degree angels. Spot weld the expanded metal to the inside bottom of the "L" .Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:specter, they want it rectangular with rounded corners. The man of the house stopped in to take a selection of what expanded metal i have to show the woman of the house. So we'll see what she says!
Reply:The newer commercial stuff I'm seeing uses a smaller mesh size than the older, so less things fall through, and your glasses are more stable.  Also, you'll certainly want the flattened type of expanded metal.Yeah, the bedframe is just about the same type of angle I've seen.  You'll then need some soft of framework inside to keep the perimeter in a plane.  I would avoid attaching the mesh in too many places though, to avoid warping issues. The rounded corners may make things more complicated, but you can cut the top out of sheet, and bend a strap to make up the side, and have it all match the angle.  It'll be a lot of "blending", but should make a very nice effect.
Reply:Frame the entire top out of flat strap, standing edge wise. You can make some sort of pattern to make it look interesting. If you really want it tot look nice you could use some extended lambs tongues from King Architectural Metals for the legs. Heres one with granite top. Attached Images
Reply:Thats a d*** nice table bob. Im not sure this customer wants it to be that fancy.   rlitman...Ishouldnt say it but i didnt even think about the sheet for the corners. But, I will use that if the job goes through. Hopefull post some pics. I always say that and never do. We'll see haw it goes thanks ya'll
