I am starting a project.....and started out with a materials list, that has some square tubing...1.5"x1.5" and 1/8 thick....Then I got to thinking, maybe I should use round instead of square....when comparing the same size of round and square tubing, is one stronger than the other ?Kansas...."if you are not on fire for God now...you will be on fire one day, and that day will last forever and ever and ever"....
Reply:Your 1.5 inch square tube has more material in it per inch that 1.5 inch round so the comparison is unfair. Yes round tubing is "better" but troublesome to fabricate. Also there is the little controversy about strength and rigidity. In most cases you want something rigid and so strength is not the first design goal. By the time you design something rigid enough , it is strong enough. I suggest that you stay with square unless every ounce of material used is critical to the success of the project.
Reply:if thats how you feel go ask god for advice
Reply:more info would be nice what is being built???to ask which is best (stronger) would depend on the item being built
Reply:I am building a custom tube bumper for my 4x4 rig....it's just general question. thought there might be someone out their that might have some engineering back ground....I really don't see that one would be much greater than the other in building a bumper...alot of people use round, just thought I would see if anyone had any experience using round vs square in there projects...Kansas"if you are not on fire for God now...you will be on fire one day, and that day will last forever and ever and ever"....

Reply:Kansas,If its just a bumper, I don't think that either would be a bad choice...Round does take more effort in joining and cutting. Its easier to bend for most people with economical benders.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Not trying to rain on the welding parade, but check out A to Z Fabrication for Jeep bumpers. He has a great design that can take some serious abuse and not brake the bank. http://www.atozfabrication.com/store...roductid=16371Make sure you tie in the bumper to the frame with a bracket kit if you installing on the rear of a Jeep.

Reply:Maybe if you paid more attention to the question and actually offered something useful, you wouldn't have noticed his sig For the original poster - round would be an easier option as far as bending. A 4 1/2" angle grinder will work for fish mouthing tubing.Fire!, Fire! Oh wait, that's my torch...Lincoln PT-225 TIGLincoln 175 MIG |
