Reply:Might just be me, but I have not had much luck tin banging a crisp 1/16 inch flange onto a rolled thin sheet steel cylinder without making a mess of it anyway.Very unlikely I would be getting any fancy equipment to do this, but good chance something can be made to do the job. Was just hoping to get some ideas on whats out there/what might work.Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:I have done this on 2" up 8" sheet metal. I fab a ring or find a steel pipe that is slightly larger (ID) than the piece I want to flange. Leave the desired amount of flange plus some for the bend. I use the ball end of a ball pien hammer then pien at O 120 240 and then index 60 degree's and repeat. Works for me hope I was clear on the idea.
Reply:Vicegrips with flat stock welded to them in the offset you want.Tim Beeker.
Reply:Flanger used in air hammer. Autobody shops use this often.Tim Beeker.
Reply:Have some, they are fine for puting a recess on the edge to weld flat panels or make smooth lap joins, but have proven no help with what I am trying to do.Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:Find an HVAC supply house near you, look for some hand seamers. They have a 4 and 6" hand brake that works pretty well. Also, the Vise Grip version is good. If you make your own Vise Grip brake, USE hard steel for the flat stock. 4130, 1/8" is a whole lot tougher and flex resistant than regular HR steel. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
