Scrolling Along

After a trip to the metal purveyor, mowing the lawn, and a short list of honey do's, I finally got a chance to get to the shop.  She wants a new queen size bed for the master bedroom, so I get to weld some more.  Spent most of Sunday bending and screwing with the scrolls on the headboard.  The footboard will be a copy of the headboard, just shorter. Reply:No dulknife, please copy it and post some pics when your done.  The only joint that had to be filled was where the heart met the other scrolls.  I had some small cutoffs that I put in the viod and just welded over them.

Reply:I just did it as I went.  The only feature I knew (or she knew) I wanted was the heart in the center.  I just kinda built off of it once it was done.  It's actually quite a bit different than what I had pictured in my mind before starting, but that's what I like about scrolls.  You make 'em and stick 'em where you think they will look best to keep the design symetrical and flowing (Franz, I think I may be in need of a Retrosexual lesson here )And dulknife, if you want any measurements, I'll be glad to post them.
Reply:Jim, all I'm gopnna say here is check the finish for handcuff scratch resistance before you paint or powder coat.  Chips are just gonna look bad after all that fancy work.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-

Reply:Jim , Nice work on the head board. I was noticing an open book with scroll patterns on the page,that caught my eye,  just behind the head board on the bench, in the pictures you posted. I was wondering if you can post the info on it, if it's a companys catalog, or a book publication with the authors name. Any info is appreciated, thanks.mariner41
Reply:Thanks Mariner.  It's a King Architectural Metals catalog.  It has a lot of scroll work pictured.  Great for an ideas book.  I had orginally planned on doing a scroll piece very similar to one I had bought from King Metals for my first bed.  But it ended up being completely different from what I had originally planned.  You can order a free catalog from them.  http://www.kingmetals.com/index.html
Reply:Jim,  Just got the hf scroller/benthtop bender. Made a nice lamp so far, and looking to do a headboard like yours. My question is what did you use to get the arch comming from the heart between the scrolls towards the outside on the bottom half?By the way, nice job

Reply:That's very nice.  Something like that will be in my future if I can manage that kind of craftsmanship.
Reply:Jimreally nice work... especially like how you blended in at the bottom of the heart... nothing like a welder and a flap disk, eh ??oh and BTW  don't use handcuffs... old silk neckties are better and leave no marks on tie point or tieiejohn

Reply:Jim,What determines the angle that you mounted the drive roller,  with respect to the two bottom fixed rollers.  It does not appear to be 90 degrees,  but a little off the perpendicular.  What is the reason that this needs to be at that angle,  and NOT at 90 degrees?Sorry for the questions,  but I'm just trying to understand the design.Great craftsmanship, Jim !!Jim Martin
Reply:I actually don't remember why I did that.  It was a trial and error project, so it was probably just a screw up.  If I did it for a reason, I don't remember it now and there's really no reason to do it that way.  Perpendicular would be fine.  The main thing to consider is to be able to get the drive roller high enough when loose to get your ring, or curve, out after you finished.  Mine won't raise high enough on small rings, so I have to unbolt the arms of the drive roller to get them out.  But they're just finger tight, so it's no big deal.
Reply:Damn, I just remembered why I had to do that.  It wasn't a screw up, it was because of a screw up.  I had to have it at that angle because the arms of the drive roller would hit the C channel that held the bottom roller if it wasn't at that angle.  I knew I had probably screwed up somewhere, just couldn't remember where

Reply:Thanks Luc.  Please make one and post the pics.  They are 5" balls from king metals.  I realized after I ordered them I could have ordered the hemospheres and welded them together for half the price.  Live and learn.

Reply:Yeah Steve, I noticed the boots after posting the picture 7018, the rails are bolted on.  This is a picture of the first bed I built, but the rails are built the same. Attached Images
