ok guys here's some pics of my new trailer in progress, I probably could of bought one cheaper than building one but what fun is that. I've also added some pics of the welds,{not too good with a camera} The trailer is made of 2x2 square and 2x1 rec for top rail and its 4'4"wide by 8' long. Attached Images
Reply:another pic right side up Attached Images
Reply:another pic of trailer Attached Images
Reply:ok here are some of the welds done with my bobcat 225 pics are not too good and i'm a wanna be weldor, gotta practice some more on welding. But I enjoy doing it after work and weekends keeps me outta the beer joints. Attached Images
Reply:just a couple more then i'll quit Attached Images
Reply:last one don't want ya'll to laugh to dang much lmao Attached Images
Reply:The welding isnt too terrible,,, you have the idea.  It will take some tie to learn to be neat.  Turn that machine up at least 10A yet.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Nice looking trailer Rodburner.  I don't see anything wrong with the welds other than like Sberry said, some could run a little hotter.
Reply:Looks good Billy, like the others said running a little cold, but other than that it really looks good, what you got the machine set at?Really looking good there bro!!!!
Reply:thanks guys, I had the machine set on 50/100 amps runnin bout a 5 on the other dial with a 3/32 7018 rod guess i need to buy some 1/8" 7018's and turn it up a knotch and get it hotter, I was playing with different settings on a lot of the welds. Trying to get in that learning curve ya know
Reply:May I strongly suggest that while it's still easy, you cut the toung loose and hinge it, so the trailer can tilt.  Many times in the future you'll be happy to have the tilt function, and it's easier to incorporate now than it will be in the future. Secondly, on a machine like the Bobcat, try setting your range switch so you will be working with the other dial about midrange.Last edited by Franz; 04-22-2004 at 12:28 PM.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:What would the reasons be for a tilted tongue? Only thing i can think of would be for inclines and such. Could you elaborate on a few things you have encountered please. thanks
Reply:hinged tongue i mean sorry bout that
Reply:By hinging the toung at the back of the toung, the trailer bed can tilt. That makes loading and unloading a lot easier.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Is a hinged tongue the same as a forked tongue?
Reply:looks good. but the axel looks a little far to the rear. mite just be old eyes.  ken
Reply:I swear you dang kids are workin me too hard for the money I get here. Attached ImagesAppreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Now i understand why ya would want it to tilt if ya was unloading a golf cart off of it but welder will be bolted to frame, I really don't see a need to tilt the bed. Appreciate the thought though Franz and thankyou for replying and giving  ideas for future projects.
Reply:Hey there rodburner....guess who????Wow nice pics.....I noticed how neat yer shop is...that's the "wow" Trailer looks good too  , but what color is it goin' to be????

Reply:I'm just waitin to see if we get a Ladies Auxiliary board on here. Will W.W. become the Martha Stuart of welding? Will there be threads on Cleaning his Lense while he's at work?Does the UV in the welding shop help houseplants during winter?Do you preferr Sledgomatic or a Cast Iron Kettle to make your point?Guys, I tell ya, we're in a heap of trouble here!Appreciation Gains You Recognition-You say you could have bought it cheaper than building....how much you figure it cost you to build that?  Where did you get the axle and the hitch?  I'm guessing a brand new trailer that size is around $500-$600.
Reply:I need the hint on cleaning lenses.  Wiping mine with a grimy t-shirt doesn't seem to help much.
Reply:Well Dog lets see 20 bucks for the Shelby hitch, 20 bucks for a hf jackstand, paid a 100 bucks for an old trailer just to have the axles and springs off of it and then there's the tubing,70' of 2x2 at the time of purchase 1.15 per ft.{$80.50} top rail 2x1 rec 20', think it was .85 per ft. {$17.00} 4'x8'x3/16" about 120 bucks if i remember correct and still need to buy 4'x8' expanded metal for side i think its close to 100 buck for a sheet of that nowdays . Found some old fenders cheap {free} still need to  buy primer paint and harder{no idea on paint prices yet} so far 357 bucks oh and still gotta build tailgate and install trailer lights and other stuff, so its gonna be close to what ya would have bought a new one for, but for the fun of building and the experience PRICELESS
Reply:Me & my buddy Trent built me a trailer about  like yours a couple of years ago, Billy.  I also bought a little old trailer for the axle for 100 bucks and there is a major advantage to that - you get to have bigger wheels and better axle & springs than what they use for those $600 HoDePo things.  I don't care for those little bitty wheels & tires - like a boat trailer, you know?  So the comparison to the pre-built trailers breaks down right there, afaiac.  The old trailer I bought was originally built to carry a propane tank mounted sideways right on top of the axle & had a little bed about 4 feet long x 4 feet wide.  We just left it & built on top of it;  that made the whole project quicker.  I wanted it to be as lightweight as possible otherwise so I could move it by hand without too much grunting because I have to hand park it between mine & the neighbor's house, which is no problem - it's downhill to get there.  Unfortunately, it is slightly uphill coming out,  so I had to make it kinda light because I'm kinda light .  It's a 4 ft x 7 ft inside measurement.  If I need to haul 4 x 8 sheets of anything I can let the gate down to horizontal.  I had to buy the coupler, jack, light & wiring kit, fenders, new springs, paint ( I just left it redlead primer), and a bunch of bolts because I decked it with 2 inch lumber (already had) and I used 1 " planks (also already had on hand) for the sidewalls.  I had some scrap angle, enough 2 1/2 " square tubing for the tongue but had to buy a couple of sticks of 2 " angle to supplement the scrap on hand.  Oh yeah, I had to buy some welding rod.  Total cost was right at $300 & I felt really good about that.  Also included $40 for a pair of used tires because I knew where to find a deal. All I needed was to replace the one that got stolen the previous Christmas day, something big enough to haul water heaters & dishwashers & the like, rarely anything over 500 lbs total.  To make it a little harder to steal, I bolt on the coupler everytime I use it & remove it when I park it.  Trailer theft is a big problem around here these days.  I suspect they wind up in Mexico.I won't post any  pictures because I'm not really trying to hijack your thread.     One of these days if the subject comes up, I can post some if anybody's curious.
Reply:I built myself a 5 x 10 trailer to mount my torch cart on, bobcat welder, put a 8 foot work bench on the one side, reels for the welding leads, tool box on it, and a bunch of other junk.  If I ever "finish" it, and get some paint on it, I will post it on here for yall to see.  I built it out of 4 inch channel, put a 3500 lb axle under it, with some old chevy 2wd truck spares.  I hate small wheels, they are also harder on your bearings, as they spin a whole lot more per mile.  Put a sheet of 3/16 tread plate on the top, used alot of scrap angle, square, and pipe for various parts.  For the hitch, I put a reciever tube up front, with the hole back further than a normal reciver does.  Welded my coupler onto a 2x2x1/4 square tube, so I can pull it out whenever, and make different hitches to pull behind a tractor, or 2 5/16 ball, or whatever the future calls for.  Still need to wire it, I have most of the recessed buckets welded in for the clearance lights, just need to run conduit under the frame for the wiring.  I also need to move the axle forward some more, which involves moving the calbe reels, as the tongue mounted toolbox is turning out heavier than I expected, especially considering the 8 welding rod holders that I will be hanging off of it.  I shouldn't have built the toolbox out of 12 guage.  Oh well.  I am also contemplating some air compressor of some sort on it, and am also looking for a good vice to mount on it.
Reply:HAY Bolt maybe u could get that walton from cutter,he mite let it go cheap!O and Billy u forgot about the tongue jack there's another 50 bucks, unless u want to drive over the Al and pick one up!
Reply:Check on Harbor Freight's jack.  Mine cost about $20, way cheaper than anyone else & it looks just the same.  I wouldn't recommend it for a real heavy rig, but for a trailer like mine I works just fine.
Reply:Last summer I decided to jump in and try my luck at building a trailer, not knowing  much about how to go about it I first assessed what I had on hand in the way of scrap material I could use, that  is what I ended up using for making the frame with. It also was why I ended up making my trailer 5'X 7.5'.    The scrap material was 1" x 4" rectangle tubing 1/8" thick. I purchased a rear end off of a front drive car and lengthened it to the length I needed using a piece of 2 3/8 tubing in the middle. I kept track of how much I spent on the project, even with using what I had on hand for the frame and spending $40.00 for the axle with tires and wheels I spent close to the cost of what I was seeing at local Orchelins store for their trailers. I have compared the finished project up close to those trailers though and mine is built alot better.  I had a lot of fun building the trailer but didn't care much for the task of painting it.
Reply:Hiya Rodburner....I just know you can barely wait to get home to fire up the computer and adjust the nozzles and what-not  into the WELDINGWEB ...* fireworks and a band playin' God Blessed Texas" ....just like 7018 there...only his song is Sweet Home Alabama .My (ahemmmmm)  technical weldin' comment of the day is: Blue's a nice color....for the trailer.

Am getting ready to install racks for cuttin bottles ya'll got any unique ideas on it or pics? gnewby am like you am not looking forward to painting it either lol
