Plasma Question

Hello eh I just purchased a cutmaster 39 and have been truly amazed by the ease of cutting compared to my a/o torch.My question is because the machine is 30 amp can all cutting with it be done using the drag method,using a drag tip.I seem to recall hearing that you do not need stand off cutting under 60 amps but i just want to be sure i didnt just dream that. Reply:Typical rule of thumb with non shielded consumables....you can drag cut below 40 Amps. With shielded consumables....you can drag cut at any amperage level.If you drag a plasma with unshielded consumables above 40 amps....you will notice some "sticktion"...the torch is hard to drag as the nozzle tries to weld itself to the plate....This damages the nozzle orifice as well.Jim

Reply:You might want to thumb through your manual.  They tried to idiot proof my cutmaster 81,  when you drag the tip, the machine automaticly limits itself to 40 amps.  Don't know if your 39 has a similar feature or not.I see Andy beat me to it.  I drag everything 1/4" and below and haven't noticed and reduction in tip life.Last edited by Boostinjdm; 10-04-2009 at 12:49 AM.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Hypertherm has a 200 Amp system (Max200) that you can drag directly on the plate without affect on nozzle life. The shield technology is a Hypertherm invention from the late 1980's....the patent has expired, and other manufacturers can produce shielded parts. I'm not sure I would like my plasma to reduce current down to 40 Amps when I was cutting at higher power....I'd rather have the shield that would allow me to grag at any power level!Jim
