I want to make a stand for a 48" glass table top. I think I want to use 2 "sched 6 steel pipe 1/8 inch thick.  I am planning to use 3 pieces 38" long, cut them in half then weld them at an angle to a plate such that they form a 3 way "v". and do the same on the other side of the plate for the "floor" side. So it will end up like 2 "v"'s connected in the middle by a plate, one side supporting the table and the other on the floor.Any better ideas? Or comments?  Thanks!
Reply:You can cut the pipe into about 400 rings of varying thickness, lay them on a flat surface, and weld them together.Glass tables can be very persnickedy about their support.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Oops! I meant schedule 60....
Reply:You might want to consider clear or tinted Lexan for the top. Stuff is damn near bullet proof.
Reply:I already have the glass top. It is 1" thick.  Weighs about 200 lbs.
Reply:Make sure where the wife wants it first time geez its gonna be heavy to move. Please post some pics when its finished
Reply:Go For It!  You have nothing to lose.  Chances are it will be great.  If your not happy with it when your done, find the lesson in the experience, and start over.  Projects like this are in the builders eye.Good Luck, Have FunCraig S.Craig S.
Reply:Here are some of the final pictures. At least my wife likes it! Attached Images
Reply:One more picture. I might do it a little diffferently next time, but all in all, the stand is very surdy and holds the 200lb glass nicely with a bead of hot glue on the tops of the tubes. Attached Images
Reply:Looks real good, tubeman.  Can you lean on it with your elbows?Wanna-be welder formerly known as Bender
Reply:Great looking job tubeman loks like a store bought table!!!
Reply:Yes, the elbow test was the first thing I did! You don't want 200lbs of glass hitting your foot. I thought the same thing when I finished welding it. That there was not going to be enough stability. But I measured another table stand to get the spread between the supports which was 22". I wanted it to be as slender as possible for "the look".
Reply:That thing looks like a modern Yuppie magnet, now all you gotta figure out is how to sell copys for $500-Just be REAL careful about settin hot objects on it, or electric coffy makers.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
