Center speaker stand

Just for fun, im going to keep a running log of a project buildup.I started here: http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...=&threadid=438 and with some good education, i calculated using 1.5x3/16 square steel tubing.The project is to build a fly-over speaker stand for a very heavy center channel. The speaker is 37lbs. I finished the CAD work to present for final approval to the customer before i go buy tubing. Attached Images
Reply:heh, and just to keep me honest. i calculate the speaker tray will sag 7/16ths" when loaded.
Reply:Is the sag factored in so that the speaker will point down toward the listening area?
Reply:to answer sticky's question:The speaker is so heavy, it was sagging the top of the cabinet (3/8 ply). Your suggestion was my first thought, too. We discussed reinforcement options, but he wanted a 'clean, on a stand' look. Also, apperently this speaker has a subwoofer (its a crazy nice speaker), and will dance and rattle a bit. Client had long term concerns about that vibration hitting his cabinet directly, and affecting his convergence and electronics.jim, We talked about that today. He wants a 10 degree down angle on the shelf, and wants it extended such that the face of the shelf is beyond the front of the TV by a couple inches. Apperently there is some passive baffling that could occur with it as drawn. Looks like i will need to add additional wieght to the feet to counter-balance this thing, as i am limited with the length of the feet.oiy- and it started so simple. hehe
Reply:He must be a audiophile.  I've never heard of passive baffling with a center channel, but I'm sure it's there, my old ears just couldn't pick it up.  That is a really heavy center speaker, is it an Infinity by any chance?

Reply:Joehobart,If your client is concerned about vibration,  your stand is going to shake like jelo.  If it is making contact with the tv, it will rattle and not only tranfer to the tv, but make a very anoying noise.   I think if you set a subwoofer on a stand like this, its going to hum from vibration and not sond good.( at least mine would)When I mount mine in the corner on top of the tv, I am going to bolt the frame to both walls and to th ceiling with about 10 bolts. I would rig up some type of adjustment system on the back of the shelf so you could adjust the degree down angle to create the perfect sweet spot.  If you move your viewing spot 2 or 3 feet forward or back, your degree will change.(drill a couple holes in the back of the shelf and weld acouple nuts on them and cut some threaded rod and make a adjustable wedge out of the back edge.  Definitelly put some type of a lip on the front edge nomatter how you make the shelf.)One of the reasons I put a piece of 2 inch by 1/8 inch strap on the front of my shelf was to not have any bow in the shelf and I don't.                                         Good Luck
Reply:Joehobart,If there is a wall beind the tv, what do you think about bolting a shelf to that wall instead of standing on the floor?  There will be alot less vibration  if it is bolted.
Reply:Subwoofer performs best on the floor and in a corner. Bass sound waves are long and tall . They sound best in rooms where the ceiling height is 11 feet or more. Since they are not directional placement is not critical, but if you want the best bass response put them in a corner on the floor. DavidDavid
Reply:The whole idea of the project is to replace the current system of a bolt-to-the-wall TV stand, to allow for dynamic room reconfiguration. I wasnt clear enough about the speaker, it is a center channel, not a subwoofer. However this thing is some audiophile's wet dream and contains a full range of speakers, including a small subwoofer. It does not vibrate the wall-mount tv stand, so i dont have any major concerns about it, although i will spend some quality time looking at dampening the shelf attachment to the frame to prevent a rattle. After seeing this guy's movie room, i have no guilt about the amount of money i spend at harbor frieght. For those of you who care this is the model*link* Definitive Technology CLR 3000 At any rate, doing the final modifications i realized that this stand isnt going to be stable. He wanted it to fly at least a couple inches in front of the face of the TV, but the tv stand is flush on the front edge. This means, at best, i could only make the front foot 2" shorter than the length of the arm. With 37lbs up there, the stand would be tippy towards the front. Too much for my taste, even if i filled the feet tubing with lead, i could only get about 60lbs out of the stand. It would probably be enough, but, with a 1000$ speaker 55" off the ground, I was not comfortable with the design without an insane amount of counterwieght.We had a nice chat about some other options, including a full frame entertainment system with legs down the sides, or building a lightwieght aluminum shelf to sit on the top of the TV case. I threw some sketches at him, but my guess is that he is just going to abort the project  Better that than a pissed off guy calling me to tell me about his now broken speaker that cost more than my house payment because my stand flipped over when the dog bumped it. *shrug* oh well, i'd rather be safe than sued.
Reply:It sounds like you have to deal with the same people I have to deal with. Some people have too much money and not enough brains. If they could just go out and buy some new brains it would be helpful to everyone that comes in contact with them. I did a job for a guy that sold all the K-rations to the Army for the Desert Storm invasion. The man had a 6 car garage and a new expensive car in each bay. Six jet skis on lifts by the dock.I had to deal with the gardner who ok'ed my little job for $3500.00.  There was another car out in the driveway with a cover on it. I asked what was under that  and the gardner said check it out. It was a custom painted corvette. I said very nice and the gardner replied ,"thats my car". It seems I have never picked the right business to be in. DavidDavid
Reply:interesting thread. any update on it ?i to am somewhat of an audiophile. my humble system sounds better than many of twice the price.i also built a stand very close to that style. but i made it mostly out of wood (i used what i had). i works VERY NICE. its bolted and long screwed together. has a plate steel base with extension stabilizers. it has the speaker, about 25#s about 1/8" above the 52" screen. i made it 8 years ago, it hasn't sagged at all. Reply:I know of no true audiophile center that has a sub built in it unless it is some piece of crap Bose speaker.A sub should be on the floor, its a waste having one in a center channel , wheather a sub should be in the corner is a matter of room design person taste. One of the best ways to place a sub is put the sub in the area that you will nomaly be listening to the system in then walk around the room to see where it sounds best, then put the sub in that area for a starting position.I have $15000 in my home stereo stuff (M&K Speakers and Lexicon preamp) and wouldn't even think of buying a center channel with a sub in it.
