Im gonna start by adding Im not a pro welder but Ive built alot of things and like nice welds. I mainly weld with a 7018 rod usually 1/8th sometimes smaller. I like Mckay and Esab and Hobart. Every now and again I can get some bulk bargains on old rods or damaged containers of them. About 3 months ago I was in a surplus store that had some Metal Worker Rods in 5 and 10 pound boxes. I bought them for 2.75 bucks each. They weld great flat but horizontal and verticle are suck city. I had a friend thats a certified structural welder and he said it was just me. I gave hime a box and and he came back telling I was right lol. The rods look good and are made in the US. I still got a couple pounds I use them when we build up plow tools or build up backhoe teeth. or as filler in flat bevel joints on loader rakes and such. I also had some rods from Cebora welding that I hated.

Reply:TSC carries a good line of Hobarts that are Taiwan. I keep 3 5pound cans of them around. The local welding supply is in a parts house. They leave the boxes open and the closed boxes are way too expensive also the enclosed boxes can be damaged on the flux. I was diggin through the pile and found some Radnors I picked up at a salvage auction. I looked like i had been drinkin or ought to have been drinking. Also on the list for bad rods it Lectro Shield, Mighty arc, esob chinese knock off that a friend came across. no two rods i nthe box weld the same. they are right with the SOB on the end.

Reply:Hey Taylor?I wonder if you didn't accidentaly get ahold of some 7024 when you bought the surplus Metal Worker rod. Are the rods or box marked?"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:As I get older and my eyesight goes I am developing a hatred for all kinds of electrodes and wires, They just don't make them like they used to! LOL Something that was told to me was that many rods are resistant to moisture and do well without storage in an oven. The trick they use is to coat the low hydrogen flux with a thin layer of cellulose based flux. I have no idea if it is true.

Reply:I don't own a stick welder, and after reading this, glad I don't. When I go to the LWS, I can ask for .035 wire and 75/25 gas, and move on. Mig is so simple, a monkey can do it. After reading this, I would never learn all the different rod applications, then have to learn what brand rod is good or bad.
Reply:Nothing to it its all learned over time. Ive been welding since I was 14 and you still learn something new every day. And it does have some advantages of Mig. I dont keep a large roll on my Millermatic 35 because I dont like to use it. and alot of time I have to weld on heavy machinery and some repairs have to be in rusty metat that not cleanable. In school we only had one mig and I just did everything with a stick welder. I do wished I was better with my up hills in mig but ill have to work on that later.
Reply:I cant stand the "Inweld" brand that our local independant LWS carries. They always order my 5p+ and Lincoln 7018 in for me..............................."Look Good Doing It"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Depends on what welder I am using. My commander welds best with a lincoln rod. Lincoln welder and lincoln rod. Who would have guess, lol. But my Miller xmt and old miller engine drive won't run lincoln rod worth a crap. But ran esab atom arc great. Reply:90% of the welding I do is with 7018, and so far I refuse to run Radnor, Hobart from TSC, Firepower. Right now I prefer Excaliburs, but I have no problem with Murex, Or Hobart Bros or the atom arc. What few 6010 I run I tend to go with Lincoln 5p+. I have yet to see anyone who can actually run the radnor 6010 without cussing like a sailor.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:We had a big pipe job, and ordered the usuall 5P+ and Excalabur, no dice on the Excalabur, even the old diehard Lincoln guys refused to use it. Ordered up a batch of Hobart418 7018 all problems solved and the old guys were as happy as old weldors can be.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:One of the more common rods in OZ are Cigweld Rods by Thermadyne.Stoody and Murex are also common.Who makes these Cigweld/Thermadyne rods? Is it Thermadyne, Murex or someone else?In Cigwelds welding consumables guide they have Murex and Stoody listed as i think they are the disributer in OZ.
Reply:This is what I use for x-ray CS pipe:Lincoln 5P (6010) I do not care for the 5P+ personally, but some of my guys like it. I get it for them no problem.
