Purchasing steel supply

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a reputable steel company that will ship to someone's house, or a good steel supply company in the northern mississippi area. I was buying from a supply warehouse about 10 miles away, but they carry no round tube between 1" and 3", and they quoted me $245.20 per 20' stick of 1.75 O.D. .120thick mild steel round tube to have it special ordered.  Needless to say I used some foul language and will not be buying from them again.  Was I wrong to think that price is a little outrageous?

Reply:I understand freight and shipping charges apply to special orders and have had to deal with this many times.  Maybe I should have stated it a little more clearly though. 245.20 per stick.  That means for the 20 sticks I wanted to order my total would have been $4,094.00 .  No grouped single shipping price, no grouped nothing, flat out 4 grand for 400 ft'.  I still feel like someone just tried to rob me.  The last time I ordered this much tubing from a machine shop when I was living in north carolina two years ago, it cost me $88.20 per stick.  I believe this is what we call the surreal world, not the real.looking at new trucks while carrying two car seats around the parking lot to "test fit".......humiliating.

Reply:Yea sorry about that, I should have been more clear from the beginning,  I will try your advice though, see where it takes me.-500hp: thank you for the tip, it looks like I'm outa there area though, I'm closer to the mississippi river than I am tupelo.looking at new trucks while carrying two car seats around the parking lot to "test fit".......humiliating.

Reply:Swampy79, If you're concerned with price, you should work on a more practical way to haul your steel stock.A steel supplier simply can't give their best price when they are arranging for the delivery of a small quantity to a residential area, where it will require  manual off-loading.Good Luck
Reply:roger that denrep but I haul my own stock back to the house when I buy from the local supplier.  I'm just looking at delivery from an online dealer  if they have what I need since I can't take a couple days off to drive several states away to pick it up from their base warehouse.looking at new trucks while carrying two car seats around the parking lot to "test fit".......humiliating.
Reply:You probably should first nail down the FOB COD price at your suppliers dock, then you can decide how much added value the one-call delivery means to you.For example if you could buy the 400' order for $1200 at the dock, maybe you could buddy-up with someone who could take the ride for a few hundred dollars, and still be way ahead.But if after lunch Grampa forgets that he's hauling over length pipe and backs into the restaurant's wall, and then the  bumped pipe shears the van's distributor off, and pokes the carburetor a good one too,  (it's true) that can wipe out the freight savings pretty quick.Poked out back windows, they're hardly worth keeping track of; although a radio or windshield will still raise an eyebrow. Reply:It's tough to say, I don't know how close you are to a large city but I would certainly not regret shopping in an hour or two radius.  I used google maps to find my local shops.http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wlYou could try zooming to where on the bottom left the legend says 10 or 20 miles to give you a good space and then type steel.  I compiled a list of my own suppliers not too long ago and asked them all for quotes.Miller 330 a/bp water cooledI believe in gun control, I hold my gun with two hands.  If you want to know why, click here.Buy American or bye America.

Reply:Ryerson, Earl M Jorgenson, Marmon Keystone are all big outfits that have distribution centers around the country.  Maybe check with one of those?
Reply:I guess I'm hijacking my own thread but where in north central wisconsin do you live ikessky?  My family has a cabin just outside of hayward, and I spend just about all the free time I can get there.  The wife and I are looking to move to middle/northen wisconsin after I graduate, how do you like it?looking at new trucks while carrying two car seats around the parking lot to "test fit".......humiliating.
Reply:I'm about 1.5 to 2 hours southeast of Hayward.  Live in a little town called Prentice.  I like it around here, but then again I was born and raised in this area.  Moved away for college, but was fortunate enough to get a job back here 6 months after graduating.  Any idea what towns you are thinking about moving to?
