What is the procedure for finishing a sheet metal butt weld. The picture is of a tig weld. Do I have to tig it on both sides and then grid one side down. Seems like if I grind down one side of a single side weld it would be a weak joint.
Reply:You really should prep the metal better to do tig. All that rust is going to make for weak welds. A lot of that metal looks like it needs to be cut out and replaced around that new patch. I'd sand all the areas adjacent to the new patch down to shinny steel before welding. Tig is very unforgiving of contaminants like rust. On sheet that thin you should have no issues doing 100% penetration welds from one side. With good material and good 100% welds you shouldn't have issues with the small amount of sanding required to blend those welds.Question, it doesn't look like exterior body work from the pict. Why do you need to grind down those small welds to smooth? Also please resize the picts first. If you don't the text gets cut off and it's tough to read..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:That is on the exterior, running boards. The other side looks better but there is a seam, I guess it could be filled with body filler but I dont like that stuff. On rear quarters, how do people run that long weld on the side of the car. That must be a nitemare to do and get it right.

Reply:Say on a quarter panel or other part, if there is a filled seam(air between gap) how would you prevent it from rusting thru someday? |
