Anyone got one of these?? Excuse my ignorance I have been welding a long time but more in the manufacturing sector. In the past few years I have been doing more small mobile repair stuff on my own including some restaurant stainless stuff and small fencing repair jobs (no complete installs) and such. As far as I understand it I can do this as long as the jobs are smaller than $600. I want to get more legit and was thing of trying to get a contractors license but am not really sure if I really need one for the more fabrication and repair stuff that I do versus more construction oriented stuff on buildings and pipelines, equipment etc. Like I said my background is not in the construction area but more in manufacturing/repair/general fabrication and I don`t see myself moving into those areas but I don`t want to get caught with my pants down per say if I unknowingly take on something I can`t legally do. Anyone have any input??? Does a contractors license really even apply to me if I stick to repair and fabrication of parts and not working on building or structures????

Reply:try legal zoom for LLC or INC.
Reply:I think that is where my confusion is because the C60 is so general I don`t know if it applies to what I do. All the others, fencing, structural, oramental don`t really apply to me as I dont do new installations or structural. Does C6o apply to mobile general repair and/or restaurant SS fabrication??? I just don`t know if I need it. Anyone?

Reply:Actually had read that before and I had the number wrong. It was $500 not $600 which everything I do is under that. Usually waaaay under that.....but the gray area that I don`t understand is what is considered construction? Say hypothetically a restaurant calls for me to go weld a broken handle/leaky sink and it is under $500 I`m fine right? Is repair/service considered construction if I`m just welding up cracks/leaks? Guess maybe I should call them and ask someone there. Better to be safe than sorry. C 60 is what I was thinking would suit me but having not ever worked with/for someone who held such a license I don`t know what industries the C60 applies to.
Reply:Best to call.
Reply:If you call the California Contractor's License Board, of course they're going to tell you need one of their licenses! They're in the business of selling license fees! That's like calling the exterminator and asking if you need to spray for bugs, of course you do! LOLFor what you describe you do (general repairs and minor fabrication), you do not need a contractor's license. If you want to get into fabricating and installing new restaurant equip, or fencing, etc, then you need the license.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Some municipalities require that you hold a current license regardless of $ amount. Having that license could open up more doors.I need to clarify that some municipalities require that you hold a current license to do work for them, that is.Last edited by Sandy; 11-11-2009 at 08:56 PM.
Reply:Read my post in Dabar's thread , I basically said it all there.Note, I took the test, twenty years ago, one part is contract/law, one part has to do with your specialty. I didn't pay anybody stupid money for a preview of the test, or any practice tests, I just man'd up and went and did it, passed first time thru. I DID read the law book thru, cover to cover,,,,, hmmm,,,, maybe I should attempt the test to join the Bar????
Reply:Desertrider: Thanks that is what I thought but after reading in other threads about sting operations I wanted to make sure I understood correctly.Sandy: Opening new doors is another reason I was thinking about getting the C60.Jsfab: Go far the Bar bruddah!
Reply:Understand, the dollar qualification applies to the TOTAL job you are doing, materials and labor. Even if the customer, supplies the material. On jobs attached to real property, not personal property.
Reply:If any job is over $500 period with labor and materials and done outside of your physical business address you need to have a CSLB. I'm a C-51 structural steel contractor.C-60 is for exactly what your describing repair welding. The law portion is REDICULOUS the amount of BS and minutia you have to learn can be daunting. The cheapest part is getting the licence. since you don't have any employees that simplify's the process not having to have any workers comp. I wont tell you the monthly overhead i have being "legit" but it makes me long for being a pirate.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Dualie,Thanks for clarifying that for me. C-60 here I come. |
