I just finished my up my welding school at four m welding school in tulsa oklahoma. I need some advice what yall would do in my shoes. I am only 18 years old i passed my last weld test 2 weeks early and it was a 6g pipe test..i took the field welding progam at the school..i have a steam card for Oklahoma (think its the only state that has one) but anyways what would yall do from here..i have called about some jobs but its all the same thing first of the year..i wanna do pipeline welding sometime in my life but dont know really were to start..i am really eager to get to work.
Reply:Well the first thing I would do is get a good clean resume made up and about 30 copies made. With your 6G cert I would look at boiler maker / repair shops or head south and get on with an oil rig company or ship yard. In the mean time you should apply to a pipe fitters union or steel workers union and in the mean time you should look at a local custom car shop or a bike shop if you have training in mig and tig as well as stick. Another thing you could do is continue your education and go for deep sea dive welding or apply to westinghouse for the nuclear pipe welding training program that entails a 2000 hour work contract which is about a year and at least gets you money and hands on experience and given that there are currently 17 applications for new reactors sitting on a desk in washington the prospects are good.
Reply:Wow, four m welding school sounds like a very good one. How is it compared to Tulsa Welding school, its counterpart? Also, have you thought about joining an apprenticeship program. With that 6g cert, you can get a Union job no problem. Try Boilmaker first, as they are more likely to hire you than pipefitters(Local 798).
Reply:How can I go about getting a apertienceship.. Don't matter what state
Reply:If you can live through cold weather, you can get good money up in Alaska and Wyoming. Also New York is good too. I'm pretty sure Boilermaker will hire you as a welder helper.
Reply:I can stand the cold lived up north for 14 years... Think I am gonna look into the boilmaker
Reply:I know here in wyoming at the mines around my townt here a quite a few boliermakers. Most of them are fairly old and are on the verge of retiring (Based on the ones I've met) Might look around in Wyoming. The cold isnt too bad either. Also, I heard something, maybe just a rumor, about a new alskan pipeline...Might research and see if thats true or false also.
Reply:any ideas about how to get pipeline welding...all my school training was uphill...but i grabbed a few downhill rods and ran downhill too..
Reply:Look into Northrup Grumman, Norfolk Naval ship yard, BAE Systems if you want to get into pipe and ship construction and titanium pipe welding on some of the new ships. |
