Anyone have any ideas on how to build some hinges for the doors an a large propane tank i am converting into a smoker grill. I wanted somthing a little more heavy duty than regular door or gate hinges.thanksmichael
Reply:Chunks of pipe welded on alternate sides with a bar going through is a common method but with the heat and such I can see them rusting and binding up over time. You can make simple hinge plates using 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick flat bar about two inches square. Drill half inch holes in the center of all your plates then use a bolts as the hinge pin for three at a time. The outer leaves tack to one side and the center leaf welds to the other side. Look for self locking nuts that are all metal rather than the nylocs. You can then adjust the squeezing action between the leaves to loosen or stiffen the hinge action.
Reply:Hinges for BBQ Pit? I just use 3/8" round bar, cut it about 3" long, bend one end into " L " shape, about 1" at end, insert into 1" piece of pipe (1/4''id). weld pipe to back of pit & 2" straight piece of round bar to BBQ pit lid. Make sure and place the " L 's " facing each other or the lid will come off. depending on the size and thickness your working with, you can make these hinges huge ( ex. 1" round bar ) Good Luck, Rik
Reply:I like your idea i think that will be the ticket. thanksmichael
Reply:I saw someone use the springs from a car or truck hood. Worked pretty good. http://community.webshots.com/photo/...69995684pIrnMS |
