Reply:You have to keep in mind that this particular way of repairing a gas tank only works when mixed with alcohol. DO NOT try this sober under any circumstances, it just won't work!I am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!

Reply:Few years ago, in the next county, a welder and a helper were running pipe connecting new tanks to an oilfield storage battery. From what I understand someone failed to close a valve on the old tanks, fumes and welding, welder was injured and the 18 year old helper was killed. Just this week a shipyard worker was killed on a refit job. Explosion of undetermined origin. I choose not to impair my judgement or play with fuel. Not to mention that guy must have never seen a hydraulic system fail. There are too many pieces of rubber in the hydraulic system on that tractor for it to be trusted with ones life. First rule of lifting, never be under the load, never. We had a 2000 pound rated hoist fall from its jib(hook seperated from hoist body) nearly took a guys head off.But in that guys own words "sweet"!Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe

Reply:In his defense, the gas wouldn't have blown up, though he could have had a serious fire in no time. But on the whole, STUPID!!! It's people like this that make me believe that there should be a licsense required to buy and operate welding equipment.

Reply:he was kind of a moron....but hes right. co2 will push the gas fumes from the tank. i am more living proof that it works because ive done it myself. i removed the gas tank and emptied it first, but yeah co2 will do that! i used dry ice, same thing though.
Reply:If the gas filler spout still has the little "door" in it, I don't see how he got much CO2 in there. I think the only thing that saved his dumba$$ was there were more gas fumes than O2 in the tank and therefore couldn't ignite. Reply:It was a legitimate (CO2 to displace oxygen) way to perform hot work a long time ago, but it's worthless without being able to monitor oxygen content in the fuel tank to be sure you are well below the lower explosive limit. Bottom line is, it does work, but don't try it at home! If you mess up there could be tragic consequences.  BTW that's Dave's farm.  They are crazy drunken Canadian hillbillies. Most of the videos have some danger potential but are pretty entertaining.

Especially the demolition guys. I have cut oil tanks full of of number two heating oil. You just have to keep the temperature down. Keep a mist of water in the tank. Reply:Yes it can be done but only if there is no oxygen inside to make it burst but then what about the bit of vapors that escape through the hole (and the bigger one made by blowing through)? They probably will light.   Yeah, I like fire in my face.  Nice trick if you belong to a circus.

Reply:I know a former ship fitter. He said he has repaired navy fuel tanks, dropped a running shielding gas line in the tank first. Oh and make sure someone is guarding the vents so some dummy doesn't walk up and get a lung full of argon.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe
Reply:I have purged gas pipline like that on 3" pipe, you could see when the gas ran out and started running argon. But I never got under a tractor bucket in shorts to weld tho.
Reply:I wouldn't do it with gas but we do it all of the time with diesel.  Just make sure the fuel level is higher than the weld.  I also inert the top of the tank with CO2.

Reply:Not very smart being under the loader without it supported as well. Not the safest thing in the world but not the dumbest thing I've ever seen either. I keep waiting to hear Dave and crew got their Darwin Award one of these days;.
