I finished making this coffee table for my mother for Christmas. 1.25 inch square tubing with 3/4 inch angle to hold the slats. The middle was dropped 3 inches for design purposes. Could not be happier with the way it turned out. Only bad thing of the whole project was it was all tigged, and since I grinded off the welds anyways, could have cut down my work time with a mig. - can't have it all I guess.   Attached Images

Reply:nice work.  I like the rough look it adds to the living room.I have absoltely no ability to make something that resembles artwork.  I joke around with my wife and tell her I may have to hire a gay man to come decorate the house, because she's not that much of a decorator either.

Reply:First rate job.
Reply:Good blend with the iron and wood. Food for thought there. Maybe more wood showing. Hmmmmmmm.
Reply:Its nicely done but it would look a little nicer if u painted it especially if its for ur mom
Reply:I kinda like it unpainted.  It is a nice contrast when looking closely, but it blends into the room otherwise.

Reply:Nice job K-razor.   It's inspired a few interior ideas for my house.   BTW, don't sweat being labeled as the "creative" type.    Being able to follow through make what you've dreamed up, impresses everyone. There are no small projects
Reply:A job well done.  I really like the lowered inset for the middle section.  I have always wanted to make a steel coffee table but I worry about the sharp metal corners with 2 young rambunctious kids.  Would it be possible to round the edges at all?  What about grinding a bit of a rounded edge?  I know the square tubing wouldn't be able to be ground down very far but I was wondering what other types of corners people have tried.  Of course, it would also be more difficult to fit the would inserts into a corner that is not square.

Reply:I showed yer table to my wife, thinking she would say, "hey, that's nice, build me one."  Instead she said, "if you start building stuff that nice, we need another house."  DOOOHHHH!!!!I hope she was just pulling my leg.  I guess I'll be sticking with farm equipment till the kids are on their own.Last edited by smithboy; 12-12-2005 at 11:38 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:kshellrazor,You can apply paste wax (pure carnuba or the like) as we do on bare (fastest rusting) cast iron woodworking machine tabletops. It seals the metal pores and keeps the oxidation from occuring. Should look as good as new for a long while. Just re-apply every few months, as needed.Nice job.Tony, in "fast rust belt", Hawaii

Reply:Thats nice. I like it a lot.  I think it looks really good unpainted, but will it rust?  It looks like its just mild steel.  Nice job.
