I had an odd thought come to me today.would it work to wire the outputs of two 110v welders in series and create a really beefy 110v welder.  or would lots of things go boom and make expensive fireworks.Realgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
Reply:It is not that uncommon to connect two engine drive welders outputs together in parallel (not series) to double the output power for heavy operations like carbon arc gouging on very thick metal.   The same can be done with machines that plug into the wall.   The way they're connected is the negatives connect together and the positives connect together and you end up 2 leads, one negative and one positive.   Miller has an instruction book on how to connect machines in parallel.  It states that both machines must have similar output and be set to the same settings and be of the same type, meaning don't connect a transformer machine to an inverter machine.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:When i was going to trade school many years ago my dad got me on at the shipyards for two months between years. I remember them gouging with some ungodly size carbon and they had two machines paralled together and watching the leads jump every time they'd strike an arc. I wish I could remember what size carbons and what they were gouging but age rears it's ugly head again . Hell, I got a hard time remembering what his post was about unless I re-read it GBG......Mike

Reply:You’d have to be very careful, the power supplies must be identical, controls set the same. The master must be wired to the slave so that the one gun trigger controls both power supplies. Both the Ground cable and or the torch cables may need upgrading for the increased current. The polarity would have to be adjusted on both power supplies at the same time for solid / flux core wire. Can it be done? Sure. Parallel four if you want, be careful.
Reply:This ,while unpractical, is interesting. Most of us our familar with paralleling 2 engine driven stick welders but wouldn't  a mig welder need an increase of both current and voltage? Series -parallel wiring 4 110 volt welders? Even with 2 welder why not just buy a 240 volt machine? You could say because you have no 240 volt outlets but you probably have a clothes drier. Running an entry level 240 volt machine on a 50 ft extension cord is going to be a far better option. To get full power out of 2 110 volt machines you're still going to have to deal with wiring mods because you're going to need 2 dedicated 120 volt outlets next to each other. By the time you get this working you're going to as much money in it as an entry level 240 volt machine.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:No problem powering everything, build a Wind Turbine, and then you’ll have all the free electric power you could ever use.
Reply:I didn't realize he was talking about mig welders.  Now that I look at his signature, I see he has a microwave oven powered stick welder and a small mig, so I guess he just likes making his own stuff rather than buying a conventional machine to do the job.  Sounds like it would be a fun project for him.  I guess the wind turbine would be right in line with his projects so maybe that is the way to do it.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
