im retarted...I was trying to reply to the guys question about gate designs. I found a bunch of stuff at gatedepot.comI have a job comming to install a 16" double swing gate. I'm not making the gate, he's had them made already and their soon to arrive so I don't have the specs yet.Anyway my first design issue is the posts. The customer is under the impression that the gate posts alone will support each 8' custome steel gate. I have rarely seen this done around these parts. Im guessing because the expansive clay soil will eventually spit it out.Last edited by TPnTX; 02-03-2006 at 11:46 AM.
Reply:here is something that may help you...here in ontario..our electric supplier (hydro 1) uses this method on their small out buildings in the countrysideauger a post hole well below the frost ...insert a post and cement it in...after concrete sets back fill to just below the frost line..slide a close fitting pipe over the post that comes to jsut above ground level (this pipe should have a grease nipple) pump the thing full of grease and then install the gates on the post that is cemented in....if the frost heaves or the ground moves it will only move the outside pipe...your post is cemented in well below frost and in virgin soilhope this makes sense to you
Reply:Thankx for the info..Wow some of those gates sure cost alot$$$
Reply:Tom the biggest mistake I see made out there is too small a footer for a gate. The rock gate hinge post is in a hole that's about three feet across and eleven feet deep. Originally it was a two by eleven hole but when the concrete truck took out the star and overhead we had to take a crane and pull the gate post. The post cut off four feet above the ground and the concrete footer weighed over seven thousand pounds according to the crane operator. For him to pull it I had to dig holes around it with my one foot auger.I don't do a drive gate less than six feet deep. Most of them are deeper than that. I can go eleven feet down and often do.If you want to see a gate click on this When you do reward yourself by clicking on "gallery" at the bottom of the page.life is good
Reply:Thats some cool looking work.
